Where is it at? Anyone been doing any good? I have not been able to get out yet. Had to do the Boat Show, then got sick for the last three weeks. Finally recovered over the weekend. Hope to head out on Saturday in area 9.
I fished in the PSA Sno King Members only derby yesterday. I got off to a rough start. I hook up the boat to the truck and no trailer lights. I discover the fuse is blown, install another fuse, and lights still don't work. I start tracing wires, wich isn't easy, and finally discover the ground wire is broken off, repair that and two hours later I am off to Edmonds.
I have my wife with me, who rarely goes out in the Winter, however this year I bought her a heater. She fished the same derby with me three years ago, it was raining, windy and cold, but we finished in 3rd place. She is good luck, but still learning how to fish. Saturday promised to be nice and warm (for February) and it didn't disappoint - beautiful winter day on the water.
I hit one of my favorite spots and find bait right away. I tied up some new rigs so I was eager to see how they work. Within a half hour a rod goes off and my wife is on it. Nice fish, but she lets slack in the line and off it goes. A short time later, the same rod goes off, she plays the fish for about half a minute and the fish gets off, this time she did it right, but that's fishing I tell her. A little while later the rod goes off again and my wife brings a nice BM to the boat, but too many fins. She loses one more fish before we call it quits.
The winner was around 13LBS cleaned. Jambo did great with eight fish for his clients. My buddy, fishing at another location, catches a halibut that measured out to be 60lbs. He is the halibut king out of Lapush, so it kills him to have to release a fish like that.
I usually fish with my buddies on board and this was one of those rare times that it was just me and my wife and we had a great time together. She doesn't have much time to fish because of her work, but in another year we will be retired and can fish together all we want.
Big Daddy, hope you did alright this weekend. Looks like things were kind of slow in the usual spots. I think Jambo was fishing in Useless Bay. I talked with one of my other buddies who was fishing in the same area. He marked a lot of fish, but no bites. I guess that is why Jambo can do it for a living and the rest of us have to have real jobs.
At anyrate, boat goes into Three Rivers tomorrow for service. A few more BM trips then it's time for Springers. I am still learning the Springer fishery in the main river, so I am looking forward to the seminar at Three Rivers.
Well, I'm finally going to get out for the first time this year. Thinking south side of hat island, heard about a little success out there lately. Any suggestions would be a great help as I'm still trying to learn how to catch em. I've heard some say drift mooching herring most say trolling some even say darts or buzz bombs if I can find balls of bait. So what do you think? Speed depth colors?
