Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I'll be in Lake Havasu Arizona in late March of this year and wondered if anyone here has fished the lake for bass. I'll likely have access to a small boat but might be restricted to shore if that doesn't come through.

Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks,

Darren

Yep, I just got back from Havasu a week or so ago. Check the recently posted pictures!

The lake will probably be a total zoo in March, but there should be fish on beds, I hear its a killer lake to fish in the Spring, I'll hopefully be back down there at the end of the month for the FLW! Shore access is a little scarce, especially since the lake should be high again by then, but site 6 is a free area with a nice dock you can fish off of. And it ABSOLUTELY has fish all around it, I would start there. There's a couple little marinas in that area that should be good areas to target bedding fish, depending on if you will be there in early or late March. Also last I heard you can shore fish the entire length of the channel, which runs underneath London Bridge, it might be a cluster if there's a lot of Spring Breakers but looked like a good area to look for spawning fish, make sure you are focusing on areas with the right bottom coposition.

If you get access to a boat and its calm I would try getting away from that general area though, seems to be the epicenter of activity. The lake should be totally cleared up by then in most areas too so prepare to fish clear water!

Good luck! Havasu is awesome!

Thanks for the tips. I've been there once before in March and you are correct. Spring breakers are everywhere near London Bridge. If I end up fishing I'll report back. Heading over to see your pics now.

Lots of great access that boat aren't aloud to enter upstream of the main ramp, if on foot, if in boat work in and around the boat ramp, I was able to finish a top 20 in an FLW event when my motor blew up the 1st day of the event so I was trolling motor only. The event was around same time of the year. Fishing should be awesome

I was their in later march early april for divisionals, but I spent one day shore fishing where Ron is talking about.  Their are 2 bays that are off limits for boats north of the ramp.  Each bay was loaded with spawning fish.  We managed to get one over 6lbs and another over 8.  When you hike into the bays stand on the bluff hills and spot beds, once you've cleaned them out just fan cast into the deeper water there will be fish all over. We threw weedless drop shots with curly tail and strait tail roboworms (light oxblood, Aarons, bed bait 1 & 2).  We also picked up a few on 6 inch Castaic trout swim baits.

At night in the southern most of the bays if I remember right there is a public dock.  We went out with bait  about 4 hours after sunset and the catfish and stripers were biting all night. Not big ones, most under 3lbs. but had a great time.  Watch out for rattlesnakes, make sure you have a good light we did see a couple.

I fished the divisional Jeff's talking about too.  For some reason the fish really seemed to want something with a little chartreuse in it.  I did well drop shotting Roboworm 4" fat worms in bold bluegill.  I also caught some nice smallmouth and largemouth on bluegill colored line through swimbaits.  I guess the zebra mussels have really taken over since I was there and the lake fishes way better now.  I've heard of guys using super light line since the water's so clear.  I've got a buddy who lives down there and he said guys will "fly line" tiny little baits with 2 lb fluoro line in the backwaters....it's a different world down there and you'll have a blast!!!

The mussels are definitely present, I was fishing an offshore brush pile and hooked 3 fish in probably 30 minutes that immediately sawed me off, once those fish get around those mussels kiss them goodbye!

Thanks for all the advice and tips guys. I'm here in Lake Havasu City now. Heading to get some tackle and my license this morning. I'll likely be bank fishing for the most part. The John boat I have access to has a somewhat questionable motor and might leave me stranded if I venture out too far. I could keep it close to the launch but I'll try dock/shore fishing first. I haven't had a chance to check the lake out yet, will do that this morning also before I get tackle. Want to see how clear it is and maybe take a peek off the London Bridge to see if I can tell if any are bedding.

Should be fun, pretty windy this morning though but was 90 yesterday. Would be nice if it kept under 80 :)

One thing that sucks is trying to take your rods on a road trip in a car... doesn't work. I had to bring my two piece trout rod and a couple spinning reels. It'll get the job done I guess.

Which ramp is the "main ramp"? I'm heading out in a few to scout some of these locations. Thanks for the info!

Had what must have been a 6 pound large mouth on. It jumped at the bank and threw the hook. My poor little trout rod was not happy but I wore him out enough to get him to the bank before he made his final jump and that was that. I don't think I was able to adequately set the hook with that rod, it is really flimsy and I was probably lucky to get a look at him let alone land him. Got a good look at and it was the biggest bass I would have caught to date :(

Was about 1:00pm and 80 degrees out on a bank with a flat and drop off about 20 feet out lined with reeds. I was throwing a weightless 5" senko wacky rigged. I'm going to try and hit that spot tomorrow morning.

If you fished around London bridge, toss around a hot lips 1/4 oz. or your favorite medium diving crank bait. Also, did well on panic minnows, not sure of the color name but it was a blue gill pattern with a red chin.

Thanks, I haven't fished the bridge channel yet but might today. I have some panic minnows and a crank bait I can try. I'll give it a shot. Heading out shortly to beat all the spring breakers.

Had that same large mouth on again today but couldn't land it. Hit a few other places close by and landed two 3 pound smallies. Great fight, especially on my trout rod! All caught from shore.
