what's with the black spots on the small mouth & large mouth I have seen more this year then ever before. Here is a photo of a SM I got other day half her face was black It does not show up too good on the photo but when there in the water it looks like its painted on kind of like Bravehart.

Hey John ,

Iv always been told that the black spots are caused by high abundance of protein in the fish .. Others have said that is has to do with skin disorder know as Melanosis , I dont have a clue what the truth is John ..lol There is not much info available that clearly advises what is the truth .. I once witness a smallmouth entire head being all black (wierd stuff)  .. check out this pic ..

I don't know what it is, but I do know its prevalent in certain areas.   Around Boardman on the Columbia you see it a ton.
Wow Dez does not even look like a small mouth I wonder do they get dark when they are deep in the winter & as they come up they lose the dark color I see it mostly in the spring.
