Just buy a new boat...who's got time for carpeting a old one :)
But once you practice on yours you can do mine!

I did a lot of research a couple of years ago and found that Bassboatseats.com had the best options/prices.  Most all of the companies will send you a free sample in the mail if you ask them to just to make sure before buying.  We did the floors with all weather carpet glue, and all the hatches with Weldwood contact cement

There's a pic of my Ranger at Feb. 02, 2014 in the customer pics.  I think they were the lowest price, and there was some shipping deals/freebies.

How's the quality/comfort?

The seats were a HUGE improvement, but I didn't think about the extra 3"-4" of height that took away from my leg space under the steering console :)  The carpet was just the same stuff that was originally in the boat, nothing special.  I wasn't brave enough (or rich enough) to upgrade to better carpet at the time due to engine repair costs.  It's not very stain resistant either, but it's wearing about the same as original.  There's also a company that sells pre-cut carpet on ebay at a higher cost.  Comes with a template, but I don't know anyone who's tried it.

What's the best carpet available?
Hmmm. Sounds like a question for BBC Boards. If I remember right there was standard/mid grade (what I got), then premium grade sold for luxury boats and pontoons, etc... But, I think the big issue was the better stuff is thicker, so if you install it on your hatch covers, they'll be so tight, they wont open. Mine are hella tight.
Bass cat carpets have good reviews. 24oz carpet

Hey Russ.  Probably already tried this but, as for your hatches being tight, have you used trimmers on the carpet around the edges to make it fit better?

Good stuff here guys.  I'm about ready to deck a 12' john for some small waters and was looking into where to get carpet.  Thanks for the link Russ.

I tried some scissors and a razor blade a bit last year, and it helped a bit. Probably need to do more. Do you mean like electric trimmers? Hadn't thought of that. I also sprayed it with different stuff. Tried Dry Teflon, Silicone, both helped a little bit.

The consensus on BBC is the "best" carpet comes from Ranger and you must order it directly. I have bought bunk carpet from Bassboatseats.com and plan on buying carpet from them as well. I am going to go with 20oz for my 1996 Skeeter.

I just re-carpeted my boat this last spring. I was on a tight budget when i did it. I used indoor/outdoor carpet from home depot. It came out looking great and was able to do my 16ft boat for less than $150 between carpet, glue and staples.
