Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

There was a largemouth brought into the scales on saturday for the club fishoff by Larry Austin that had stitches, yes stitches in it. Below is the picture. Any thoughts on what this could have been?

Thats interesting? aqua Doc!

BUSTED!

Someone planted a microchip in it with GPS tracking, so they can catch it during a tourny. Did Larry have any large antennas in his boat?

I think she had her appendix out.
good point Chad. that fish should have been kept and turned in to F&G. kind of a dumb ass move  though if somebody is actually doing this, being that it is so blatant. damn we didn't have these kind of geeks fishing bass tourney's back in the day. I would bet that if this was a cheating attempt and we caught the cheating MF we could make him cry !

Fish Tracking (Radio Telemetry)

Not as creative as some of the other answers, but a little more credible...

I have used these in several studies in the past, and with UDub nearby I'm sure you helped provide interesting tracking data for some fisheries biology student working on his or her thesis...

No, radio telemetry transmitters for fish are not a microchip; they are larger and shaped like a .357 Magnum bullet.  They are usually placed in the abdominal cavity by surgically implanting them (slice and stitch).

No problem; these actually transmit a radio signal that a guy in a boat with a radio receiver can actually search and find the signal with their headphones, and drive their boat to where the bass is hiding.  Over a period of time you can map all the locations and time of day you find where the bass is located.  It is amazing during these studies to find bass are often in a spot that nobody would have believed the bass could be hiding.

Marc,

Do you have any links/copies of any thesis's that used radio telemetry on Lake Washington or Sammamish? I like everyone wan't to know what happens to them in the winter.

Not Lake Washington or Sammamish, but here is a study done with Largemouth Bass on the Pend O'reille River.

Good read B.J! Fish (035) must of cloned himself, because they recorded him in two locations at once on 4  November. Interesting the bigger fish move the most; however, they state fish return to the same winter locations year after year.
