Here's a rundown of the latest city/council committee meeting regarding the philosophy behind the AIS fees.  It's a manufactured crisis designed to get boats off Lake Whatcom.  And, by the way, the county plans to do the same with every lake in Whatcom County.

Stan must have house on lake Whatcom. Fees are going towards his new car, vacation, and college funds for his kids.
All you have to say is "protect our drinking water" and people assume the worst. I won't stop fishing Lake Whatcom if boats are banned. That, I can promise you. I will comply to the rules they have for the time being but they will have a lawsuit on their hands if they try to tell me I can't fish a public navigable waterway. That's all there is to that.
I also think that maybe we need to sponsor a page in the Bellingham Herald and let people know what he is up to. I bet many in favor of boats have no clue and vote him in.
Sucks for any floatplane owners as well that live on or visit the lake. Iam sure all of money they make will go into "The lake restoration fund" there pockets so they can travel all over the US on "field trips" to study how other states are ripping people off by imposing a tax for this invasive money making species that will never be eliminated . Can't we just throw some carp in there to eat em.
There are Asian Clams but I haven't heard of any zebra mussels. That must have been a misprint.
There is a 2011 report on the lake that was done . There is also some clean drinking water movement that tried to get gas motors banned in 2004 but it didn't make the ballot. Haters will hate

I always get exciting for an Asian Clam thread!!!!!!!

I think the "zebra mussels" was a typo.  The fact is that any boat or trailer leaving any zebra-mussel infested lake in the western US is cleaned and inspected after it's out of the water.  This fact has been conveniently ignored.  Also, if you check the fees for boats getting AIS permits for infected lakes, such as Tahoe and Mead, you'll see they're less than half the cost of the local fees--most are in the $20 range and go year-round; since our fees really only go from late April through October, we're paying $50 for six months, not one year.

As an Asian Clam Hunter, LK Whatcom has a bountiful supply.  Unfortunately, you need to trim the beards...
