Washington Fishing

Would be interested to hear how it went for others. I only made it as far as Tiger Mountain on Thursday afternoon after work before my transmission refused to go uphill. Lost the high speed clutch pack inside, and my rig is in the shop waiting for a tranny rebuild.

Mike couldn't bring his boat since his brand new electric motor was faulty, so we had to miss the Championship!

What a year to forget. Washed out of three tourneys this year due to boat problems, then a tow vehicle problem for the Championships. If it weren't for bad luck, we wouldn't have any luck at all!

So how was the bite?

I wish I could tell you that you missed a fishing free-for-all, but it was brutally tough fishing for most teams after talking with people and seeing the results.  Smith and Jensen tore it up with 30+lbs, but only 20 teams found limits both days.  We felt good about our day 1 effort of 9.98, but could only muster 3 fish on day 2.  Sorry to hear about your truck problems.

Sorry you missed the championship Marc it really sucks that vehicle problems got in the way of that man so i know how ya feel..

As for the Wild and Wonder bass of banks lake :)

Through out the day on day 1  i found myself often wondering if we would get another bite as each hour went by  without no action . We fished a 100 yard stretch down lake that gave us one bite every 1-2hrs  , if you happen to miss the one bite when it accured "start over and wait another hour" ..lol

We managed to get five fish in the boat that put us in 8th place on day 1 with a bag just over 12lbs . On day 2 , we went back to the same spot and got 2 fish over two lbs within the first couple of hours then the spot died for the remainder of the day . after a few milk runs we  put together a limit that went just over 8lbs which happen too be good enough for 10th place overall ..

The guys that won really deserved the boat !! they put 10 LMB on the scales over 2days in an extremely tuff bite scenario , so HATS OFF too jenson & Smith :)

Wow, didn't think the largemouths would play, but it makes sense that it would take green fish to knock off Dana and Steve on Banks at this time of the year.  Good job to them, and of course to Jensen and Smith.

You can't imagine how hard it is to get knocked out of competition by mechanical issues.  This one just snuck up on me as my Yukon has been well maintained and flawless for all of its 178,000 miles.  Of all the times it decides to quit, it has to be on my way to the biggest tournament of the year.

I am also bummed not to see Hobbs and Wolsky get their AOY award, and also not able to deliver QuickDrops to the anglers again this year.

Was it a reaction bait bite, or soft plastics for most?

That is really horrible Marc!  Sorry to hear about that.  I was wondering why I didn't see you guys over there.  The bite was slow, as the previous post had said.  We didn't have any reaction bites either.  We actually had a pretty good Friday, locating a bunch of fish.  Go figure, they all dissapeared on Saturday.  We managed to scrape a a limit that went around 7-1/2lbs.  We totally changed areas on Sunday and basically fished mostly new stuff and managed to get a little over 11lbs, good enough for 13th.  Hats off to the Idaho boys!  Those guys are amazing fishermen to say the least.  Dana, congrats to you guys too.  My hats off to you for your consistant finishes over they years at these things.

Dana I am still wondering the same thing today. We actually had a couple of really good days in pre-fish and felt like it would take 26-28 pounds to win. We gave up on the LM pretty early in practice after finding a lot of them but not figuring out how to make them bite. We decided to leave all of our SM stuff alone on Friday and spend the entire day putting a LM program together. After 10 hours of fishing and only getting 1 bite our mind was made up that it was going to be SM for us. When given the choice I will always choose LM over SM just because I am more comfortable fishing that way but we literally could not figure out how to make those fish bite.

We had to make some pretty big adjustments on Saturday to catch the 10.92 we caught. The last time we had seen any of our water was the Friday of the last weekend of pre-fishing. I was pretty surprised to see how much of the grass we were fishing had disappeared once the tournament started. In retrospect we should have checked a few of our spots on Friday or at least that same kind of stuff. We weren't dependant on a spot because we felt like we had a super solid pattern. We duplicated it all over the lake the weekend before and when we heard how badly guys were struggling we thought we had possibly "cracked" the code.

We lost one big fish each day that would have moved us up but we never had the bites to even come close to winning. That place made me feel pretty dumb for most of the weekend and certainly shook my confidence. It is very impressive what those guys did to put together back to back days like they did and they deserve to have won that tournament for sure. I learned a lot over the last month down there and I'm a little sad the season is over but probably need the break.

I know I bust a lot of guys balls on here but hats off to all of you guys that stuck out the season and ran hard to the end. I heard a lot of chatter from various guys that had all but given up after the last pre-fish weekend. It is a long season and this one in particular felt a little longer than the others. A lot of us have been working really hard since March and not just on fishing but juggling everything else along the way. It is truly inspiring to see the "older" guys (I say that as respectfully as possible) like Dana and Steve and a few of the others go as hard as they do. It gives me hope that I can run that hard for a lot longer. Every year I keep wondering if I will have the same drive to be the first on and last off. At least there are a few examples that it is possible.

Marc,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Never the same when we're not competing against "Team M&M". Our pre fish was horrible. I was thinking 20 lbs could have a possibility of winning. We were fortunate enough to milk a few good bites to save our weekend. No reaction at all for us, lot's of dead sticking plastic to get our better bites. Who can compete against 30 lbs! Jensen and Smith still have me scratching my head, they are one tough team and I'm extremely happy for them. They were in a class by themselves last weekend. I just can't figure out how the rest of the largemouth experts missed what they found?

Wow, you guys really make me feel even older. I have fished club level tournaments since 1971, and competed in my first National level tournament at the 1975 Federation Nationals. I am actually a charter member of BASS (and lifetime member), that is how old I am.

Getting older has not lessened my passion. It has improved my decision-making skills, and improved my financial position, but it has hurt my eyesight and risk-taking. I used to be able to see bass where others only saw water, but those days are largely over. On the good side, now I can run a Ranger and consider it "fast" because it runs as fast as I can see.

One of the greatest aspects of fishing is the ability to continue competing as long as one wants.

My transmission will get fixed, and our outboard and electric motor mechanical issues are now behind us, so don't expect a free pass at next year's tournaments.

Thanks for the info on the bite; it is interesting to relate that information to the availability of bait and weeds. Sounds like many of the bass had reverted to feeding at night, making it a tough bite during the day, especially on reaction baits. It sounds like finesse was necessary to convince a bass to open its mouth.
Good job in figuring it out!

When people start thinking Dana's old, I hate to think what I'm thought as?? Especially after Stiles told everyone it was my 39 birthday, thanks Gary, LOL.

We had a pretty bad pre-fish but found two spots holding quality SM. and some OK top-water at first light for maybe 30 mins.

Tournament day I lost our first fish spit the top-water right at me. I think that was a signal. We only managed four more bites Sat.

Sunday we slowed down (probably age) and had a better day boating 5 fish for 9+

Hats off to the top teams, you did a great job on a lake that was fishing as tough as I've ever seen it in 30+ years..

I too, like Dana, am ready to go again. Pete and I will be hitting Shasta for a few tourney's this Fall.

Thx Gary and Lisa, glad your staying with us>>>>

Thanks my friend! Some days dinosaur fits>>>

Did you get that info for me on the pickup bed gun box??

I hope you guys realize I was not calling anyone old. Age is relative anyway. I am 37 and my kids ask me about the old days as if I were areound in the old days. I was just stating how impressive it is to see guys older than myself still kicking ass. I get annoyed hearing guys my age and younger whine about crap as if they were 80. I heard a guy say the funniest thing this weekend. Maybe you guys have heard this before but it was new to me. He asked a guy who was whining if he needed a prescription of tryactin. When I asked him what tryactin was he said, " try acting like a man". Cracked me up.

I know EXACTLY what you mean Potter......how long did we have to put up with this?

He still uses it when we aren't around.

You are dead to me, and so are you Josh. Glad I made the decision to find a new tournament partner.
