Here we go !!!!  With water temps on the main lake near or at 45 degrees, many things are beginning to happen at once!  Keep in mind that protected waters can be several to many degrees higher than the main lake, so those areas may be days to weeks ahead of others.  Both rainbow and walleye are now spawning, although as I've said in earlier blogs nature never puts all her eggs in one basket, so there are walleye and rainbow in pre, post, and active spawning modes as we speak.  So what does that mean?  Well, in a nut shell, there are a multitude of patterns and depths that can be productive right now.  Fish actively involved in spawning are not generally feeding actively.  Being that neither trout or walleye are nest builders, and males don't hang out to protect the eggs or fry, there is little point in targeting those species while actively spawning.  So what to do?  One, look for areas of the lake that are cooler, less stable areas, fish in those areas may still be in prespawn mode.  Or, look for post spawn fish.  Keep in mind that most spawned out fish go thru a period of inactivity right after the spawn.  This may last for a few days or weeks, but Kattie bar the doors, when they decide to feed, it's game on!  Also at this temp, crappie are moving up, Signal craws are beginning to be far more active, and with a bit of weather and temp stability, the bass will make decisive moves into the shallows far more often.

These conditions, adjusted for temp, are occuring on most waters in this region at this time.  Don't limit yourself to what has worked in the past, now is a good time to think outside the box!  Looking for fish shallower or deeper that expected, using more or less aggresive tactics, even switching from bait to lures or vice versa can put you into an unexpected frenzy of fish.  Keep in mind that fish on the verge of spawning can be very aggressive, and sometimes, oversized baits can trigger explosive attacks from hyped up, just about to spawn fish.

Well, I have lots to do to get things prepared for the Triple Fish Challenge this weekend, if you havent heard of it, go to the GrandCouleeDam Chamber Of Commerce website to learn more, it should be a great time with the projected weather.  Get out and FISH, Just a few TRUTHS AND TAILS from Lou at Playland, Tight Lines Folks.
