Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

There are some good teams that fish NWB that have had some success and frequent this website.

MIKE BESS-JON SESSLER, RONALD HOBBS, JR-MIKE WOLSKY, DON HOGUE-RYAN BROWN, MARC MARCANTONIO-MIKE MATKOWSKI, DANA STEINER-STEVE LACEY, ERIC SMITH-BRIAN SMITH, JAKE BOOMER-JASON BRYAN, JEFFREY ABBOTT-ROBERT FLOWERS,JEFF GRIMES-LES WHITLEY, JR., and many others.

What do you guys feel makes you a good team?

Here is a great article that goes along with my question.

"Good" is a relative term when referencing us - especially in the rest of the company that you mention, unless you were only comparing Mike and I to Jeff Grimes - then we are probably closer to Fantastic.

We are a good team, because I have the patience to fish with a "mildly retarded" man-child (Josh Potter's very accurate description - not mine). Being a parent has many merits.

Not sure I'll ever be on that list, but I'm sure if you get the replies you'll see "knowing each others strengths" very often.  Also, teamwork, and not being selfish.  Of course maybe some of these mega teams are formed due to the fact they have been burned by people not payin' up at the end of the day LOL.  Maybe, maybe not, just thought that was funny on a boring sunday night.

Hope you get some responses Joel, good topic.

Great topic Joel.  I've never fished a team event.  I will say that while it seems like common sense, I think some folks overlook one very important aspect of any team event...and that is commitment.

If one team partner isn't interested in improving, or widening their capabilities, and the other is putting in the effort to get better, you will have instant inequity.

When I look at teams that have consistent success, you see partners who have similar commitment levels.  There are many reasons that create differing commitment, and so I think its hard to find a partner who has the same outlook that you do.

No matter the team sport involved, it is only as strong as the weakest link, and while even the best teams have differing skill sets, both partners should be working toward evolving and improving. If one of the team members wants to do the same ol' stuff on the same ol' bodies of water, and the other guy wants to grow, I can't see how that will turn out well.

For some, success isn't the main priority, rather just having fun in a competitive format is the deal, but you asked about successful teams...

Good topic, basically what Sessler is saying. Don't take yourself too seriously, or at all. Just go out and have a blast fishing. Rob and I are cousins, we were raised on the Cowlitz river and we just know how to fish together. It pays to know what kind of beer the other guy likes, when your licking the wounds after getting beat by one of those teams mentioned above. Well 90% of the teams mentioned above, see ya at Moses Sessler.

I agree with Jeff, having fun together is #1. Being good freinds outside of fishing and knowing your partner and his personality is key I think. Win or lose, you have to enjoy spending time with your him because almost 50% off the time is spent off the water, traveling, prepping, etc.

Also have to have good communication no matter what, whether on or off the water. From who's doing what for prep, hotels, gas, etc, and on the water you got to communicate what you are thinking and be able to freely communicate with each other. If not, emotions can set in which usually never ends well and someone always is left with bad feelings. Just my .02

The guys you listed didn't just happen overnight!

You two have young kids.....you are no longer a threat!

Feels like an absolute nightmare that never ends, similar to the movie "Groundhog Day" except we never eventually get it "right"...

Come on sessler....you were first on the list and I was last....there's no way I could be in the same league as you and bess

If you can work together on a so called strategy or game plan.....and if you can adjust on the water if you have to.......making decisions together......win or lose.....and at the ramp or on the way home you can have a beer and still speak......and make plans for the next trip together....it's a good team. I like to have fun....joke around and enjoy the day on the water. When you can do that on the tough days as much as you do on the good days.....it makes the whole thing worthwhile at the end.

I heard that sessler and bess hate each other......so they must have a different outlook

Thank you for recognizing this undeniable fact.

Hate is an awful strong word to use.........but not strong enough!

Amen Jeff, you are smarter than you look.

Don't misconstrued "hate" for anger. Jon's actions, fishing or not, angers me but I don't hate him for it.

Jeff don't listen to him I have a 2.5 and 4 year old that averages out to 1 a piece in our boat, We do just fine, either that or Wolsky just picks up my double negative non threat ability in the boat!
