Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Went to Tapps yesterday for a drive around.  It was truly amazing/sickening.  I am a bit worried about the fishery short term, but if you think about it, there may be some plus sides to it.  If there is a "munch-fest" going on in the ponds right now (not too likely in 40 deg water), it's mostly the 6-10 fish that are getting munched.  We've all been pissing and moaning about the overabundance of under 12" SM, well now they should get managed down a bit, leaving bigger fish.  Also, more Rock Bass are probably being depleted from fish and bird predation then ever before...yah!

It's really cool to locate visually stuff that came up on sonar, but I couldn't quite make out.  I saw 2 car motors, and 2 safes with broken doors rusting away, bridges, train tussles, platforms, docks, tree lines, ditches.  In one spot a brush field that I never new about.  I even got to go into the north end park and take photos.  We gotta take the good with the bad, and there is definitely a cool side to this tragedy.

I'm hoping this really drops the rock bass and dink population out there I walked the lake over the weekend and found a lot of new structure to fish. I agree there this a cool side to this! And I think I found the motors that you were talking about too. Ha

I just looked at the Cascade Water Alliance page and the projects appear to have been going well.  It looks like they will begin filling the lake around mid-March.  We may actually have enough water for the bass spawn.  A link to the CWA projects is here:  http://cascadewater.org/project-overview.php

Yah.  I've been watching that.  I've got it bookmarked on my cell phone (along with oil prices).  I must be obsessed.  I saw it going up the other day only to find out it was a false alarm... rainwater :(  1" was all.

I need to find better things to do with my time.  More prayer and meditation I guess.

Cascade has updated its Lake Tapps news section ( http://cascadewater.org/2015/03/05/lake-tapps-reservoir-update/ ) stating that the lake refill should begin the week of March 16th and targeted to be at the "recreational level" height by Memorial Day weekend.

Kevin - thanks for the update.  I think Tapps will actually fare better than most think.  Especially if they get some water flowing in there as projected.

Cool.  I hope they open both parks early like usual.  "recreation level", like we all know, is 15 feet higher than most of us need to fish!

That's not what the channel 4,5 and 7 news said this morning and a few locals that live there! No fishing boating or anything.

Yah, channel 4 said "The lake will reopen once lake levels are high enough to support a fishery, DFW officials said"

Lets hope that it's like last year at 10ft or so below full pool

If you guys look at the CWA website..it totally depends on the "flow rate." Right now...NO FLOW is coming it AT ALL.. Low flow would mean filled by May 28th..High Flow..looks like mid April..I live on Inlet Island. The south bay is still dry all the way back to the flume..all is dry on the south end..south of Snagg, Scout and the east side of Scout and the stump field is what it is..a dry stump field. Its freeking ridiculous.East side of Tapps Island is a small big pool..West side of Tapps Island is dry..The outlet is dry..the tressel is right there..quite impressive and DRY.. North lake dikes 3-4 are dry...there is a pool on the main lake but its quite small for the size..Cascade Water really screwed the pooch on these projects. Not impressed at all with them. They were looking at making it a drinking water reservoir..good luck with that. Its freeking ridiculous! The fish are going to be wiped out..straight up! Glad I don't own a house out here..I'd be pissed! I am and I rent out here..its crap!

There's a cool aerial photo they took somewhere on Cascade's website that shows the "Ponds", also there is a really cool video that some guy made on YouTube from his drone from the Southeast channel.  Have hope!  It will recover (maybe not the LM) eventually!

FYI.... If you are thinking about walking the lake bed, or have posted on a public forum regarding this action, read this:
http://cascadewater.org/2014/10/27/cascade-law-enforcement-warning-...

It would be a pretty good idea if Cascade Water allowed folks to go out there and pick up all the freeking garbage out there. My buddy was out by Bankers Island and there were televisions and all kinds of garbage on the lake bed..idk i'd be down for helping to pick up all the crap out there..also North Tapps Park opens April 1..wonder if that will change too?
