Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hey guys. Been a while since I've been on WF but glad to be back. I want to learn how to drop shot over the winter so I can be ready to give it a try this spring. But I'm not sure what pound line to use. I plan on using 10# braid for the main line and fluorocarbon leader to the gear. But not sure what pound to go. I'm assuming I'll be using the DS in places like Whatcom and Samish where the water is clear. For those of you who drop shot these places or lakes similar what pound leader do you use for you DS rigs?

I use 6# blue label for leader.  Also, don't limit yourself to just the clearest water.  I always have a drop shot ready to go, no matter the lake.

6 or 8lb P-Line 100% fluorocarbon depending on sinker weight, bait, presentation, etc.

And Whatcom is closed in the winter unfortunately...

Larrick , I think you can gather a ton of info by simply going to the search field on this site and type in

"Drop Shot"  Tons of info there brother ~ ! It is sometimes tuff to get good feedback from this group on topic that has been heavily discussed in past IMO .

@ Nick yeah I know already thinking ahead to next season.

@ Dez sup? Yeah should of but thought I'd put it out there to see what everybody's personal opinion was.

Hi Larrick,

I like to run 8 lb. (.009" - .010" diameter so we're talking apples to apples) fluorocarbon leader whenever I can get away with it.  6 lb. leader (.008") requires more care with big fish or if cover is involved, but it seems like you can reel in a cinder block with 8 lb.  For that reason I prefer 8 lb. if I feel like I can get bit well on that larger line diameter.

I've come to really like using 7. Used to use 6 a lot. But I haven't seen a decline in bites with 7.

I'm still using 5lb flouro and have never broken a fish off. I'm not too sure of the effects winter temps would have on a line that light, but I have broken a hook at the bend before during the summer months.

I'm glad to see someone else paying just as much attention to diameter as pound test. Fish can't sense pound test but they can sense diameter.
