Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Received my Lowrance StructureScan unit today, and hope to mount it tomorrow or this weekend at the latest. Looking forward to using it, especially on Lake Washington.

When I get it all setup and put it to use I'll show some screenshots.

I also learned last night that you can actually overlay your traditional 2D view on top of your DownScan view to better show the position of fish. Pretty slick looking views.

Marc

How much does the extras cost? And will it run on an HD8

Here are my first screen shots on my maiden LSS-1 voyage. The wind was pretty bad, so the boat was really bouncing yet the pictures came out great!

These are on Lake Washington...

Not bad clarity for water so rough the waves were soaking me and the boat was bouncing so much it was impossible to drive in a straight line!

Russ, these shots were taken with my HDS-8. It is an add-on module (Lowrance LSS-1) which comes with the black box, a StructureScan/DownScan transducer with mounting hardware, and a 15-foot ethernet cable. They retail for $600, but you can probably find it for about $50 less.

ciao,
Marc

Thanks for posting the pics Marc. Keep them coming.
Marc, those are fantastic! Thanks for posting those. That just made up my mind on what units to get.
If I only had a small percent of the knowledge you own about structure on Lake Washington...
Marc,

First off let me say sorry for the gibberish I wrote earlier in the thread... can't believe I wrote that.
Next Thank you very much for all the pictures we do appreciate your effort as usual. Nice clean install!

Question about the operation.... Did you find boat speed to make a difference in clarity? How fast was too fast or how slow was too slow? Also I have heard mixed comments on the Hummingbird when it comes to spotting fish in the side image views can you comment on this?

I noticed the placement of your transducer on your jack plate is this a Lowrance recommended placement? Any issues with turbulence and image quality? Any consideration or thoughts on relocating it?

TIA,
Steve
Steve,

I still have much to learn about using the StructureScan and what works best for settings. I also have more to learn about transducer placement. That being said, I'm confident that my transducer location is approximately the best location for my needs and considering I do not want to drill holes in my Ranger hull.

I do plan to change my mount in another two weeks once I receive a custom made bracket from TransducerShieldandSaver.com. I am helping them to design a new L bracket for Slidemaster jackplates to work with their new LSS-1 transducer bracket. We finished the design today, and the owner will start his fabrication magic and have a prototype mailed to me next week after powder coating it.

As far as speed goes, the LSS-1 can actually work at speeds up to 35 mph on the right hull and mounting location reportedly. I know of one Lowrance prostaffer that had great success at 15 mph on his saltwater boat. However in my opinion I doubt any bassboat will ever see speeds this fast because of the stepped hulls most of us have. These will create turbulence that will disrupt the signal clarity. I have only been on one time (Saturday) and the wind was so strong I was taking waves over the bow and found it impossible to even track on a straight line, let alone test different speeds or ranges to see how the clarity is affected. More on this later with additional seat time.

It is also too early for me to comment on spotting fish with side imaging; while I'm sure this will be possible and helpful, I doubt that it will be the biggest attraction for side imaging. I would think a better picture of fish would be possible with a standard 200 kHz transducer since these were designed specifically for spotting fish.

Hope this helps.

ciao,
Marc

DOES NOT COMPUTE.....DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!!

My setup is the following: Two HDS-8's with Insight mapping, networked on a NMEA 2000 network (for all engine functions, oil and fuel level sensors, water temp sensors, fuel flow, etc), and networked with the ethernet cables to the StructureScan module.

With this setup you can view any transducer (sump and bow transducer, and StructureScan transducer) on either or both HDS-8 unit.

You are the young gun...this is all supposed to make better sense to you than an old guy like me! What's not to compute?

Geez, I feel slighted; I'm the one always teaching my own kids how to program their DVR's and fix their computers, and I don't even do electronics for a living.

ciao,

Wow Marc,

That looks great, I am getting a new Legend Alpha 199 this Spring and I am considering the HDS for my new boat.
Marc, These are impressive images!!

lol...I was just goofing around Marc. This stuff on your boat seems so complicated. I go to check out the most basic fish finders, and I seem overwhelmed. I'm just not very good with electronics. When I read your post of your setup, my cpu (brain) absolutely crashed.

Good on you for not being intimidated by technology and really getting into it. If I were willing to invest the same time and finance, it would probably allow me to catch a lot more fish.

I checked out your pics, and those are pretty slick. I look forward to seeing some of the stuff you come across in the spring!
