Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

This is really my first year adopting crank-baits into my offerings, and have been pleasantly suprised with the quality of fish.  I've been fishing basic Norman model A crank baits that dive 4-8 feet.  Been just reeling in...and its worked but the last couple times I've been ripping the crank then let it sit, then when I twitch it again I get slammed.

I was wondering if anyone wanted to discuss the finer points of crankbait fishing for smallmouth.  All I know at this point is that they are a kick in the pants to fish and they attract some big bites.

Lipless crankbaits are a great addition to the crankbait arsenal. We catch a lot of spring SM on them in most all the lakes we fish. You can retrieve them, yo-yo them or rip them in much the same way you described; very easy bait to fish. My buddy boated a 7' 3" LM about two weeks ago using a lipless, so I know they work for bigger fish.
Scott,

I've seen some great largies taken on TV with lipless...A good example was KVD in the classic, so I know they work, but I've found that for smallmouth Billed cranks produce MUCH bigger fish for me. Lipless cranks always seem to produce numbers and seem to be a better search bait due to the lack of wear and tear on your body, but i havent had big fish luck with em.

Chad,

Good website, I'll have to read the rest of the articles when I get a chance! Thanks.

Jon is right; it is one of my favorite techniques. I'm short on time at the moment so I will let others chime in first and will add some thoughts tomorrow or Thursday when I get a chance.

ciao,
Marc

Deep diving crankbaits, passed near Smallmouth on beds have produced some great fishing the last few weeks.

Jake, I have been catching SM & LM on crankbaits for over 30 years in the west and I will tell you it's one of the best ways to catch big fish. I fish several crankbaits, but two of my favorites are the TimberTiger in a DC 8 and DC 16 (DC meaning the depth they reach on 10 lb test) most of the time with these two I'm crankin them steady and fast. Firetiger and the new sexy shad will do want you need most of the time. Don't forget the stop and go technique when the steady retrieve doesn't work. I'm also a big believer in throwing a crankbait that digs the bottom when possible.
I will throw a DC 8 when the depth is less than 8' and the DC 16 when it's less than 16'. If I need something in the middle I switch to the DC 13. But in most cases the DC 8 and 16 work just fine. Remember going to a bigger line test will make your baits run shallower if neeeded. Thx Bill
You're doin it wrong.

Lipless cranks will catch lots of fish, including small ones. Find the bigger fish and it'll catch them too. Honestly, billed cranks are the same way.

Like Bill mentioned, I like Timber Tiger cranks as well. Also silver brush baby with a blue back works good. Lately I've had tremendous luck with a Rapala glass rap in craw color. This lure suspends as well, so I try to bang it into as much rocky bottom as possible. As it gets to deeper water, I pause it, then start again almost immediately. That's when the strikes occur.
If im going to throw a crank for smallies it will be a gold rattletrap, it will get numbers and pigs as well. But some brand work better than others though...
Weeely?
