I have had the opportunity to work very closely with Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops for the past 15 months as they are two of my largest retail accounts in the country. Cabela's uses a tremendous amount of catalog and internet sales data, as well as in-store retail sales data to create essentially a geographic scatter plot. Notice that Cabela's always asks for your phone number or a zip code when you make a purchase in the store. This is for data collection purposes. Based on the tens of thousands of purchase area/zip codes plotted in a given region, they are able to pinpoint the best possible new store locations based on quantified demand. There are other variables factored in of course, but this sales data is key. Larrick, since Cabela's stores are destination locations, having them in or near a metropolitan area is not part of the criteria. The data has shown that the average Cabela's retail customer travels approximately 200 miles and spends 4 hours in the store.
Since Bass Pro Shops uses a similar model, the probability of them opening a store in the Northwest anytime in the near future is very slim. I am going on the assumption that we have very little catalog and internet order activity from BPS compared to other parts of the country that have a much more robust population of bass anglers. How many of you order from Bass Pro Shops vs. shopping locally or ordering from Tackle Warehouse?
It costs millions of dollars for these Mass Merchants to open a new store location. With profitability and strong return on investment being such a huge priority for these retailers, especially for a publicly traded company like Cabela's, these new store location decisions are not made lightly or without a huge amount of hard data to justify breaking ground. The Lacey Cabela's store has been incredibly successful. While the Marysville location may cannibalize a percentage of Lacey's business, Cabela's wouldn't open this new location if they weren't 100% confident their business will grow significantly in the Northwest.
The great thing about stores like Limit Out Performance Marine, Three Rivers and Auburn Sports and Marine, is they carry specialized tackle for our local fisheries that the Mass Merchants like Cabela's don't offer.
Good post, Larrick. Thank you for the thoughts.
Keep in mind, Las Vegas is a half hour from Lake Mead, home of the U.S. Open, dozens of large bass tournaments hosted annually including the major West Coast circuit championships, not to mention the popular striped bass fishing. 40 million people visit Las Vegas each year as well.
The Canadian Bass Pro Shops stores are a slightly different model, which I can touch base on later in detail, but I have to head into work early this morning.
There is no harm in contacting Bass Pro and letting them know you would like a store in Washington. However, unless there are thousands of anglers, hunters and campers just like you in Washington State that currently support their business via catalog and/or internet in a big way, coupled with strong results in their demographic studies and research, I don't believe it is realistic for Bass Pro to bring a store to Washington State anytime soon. I could be wrong, but that is what my gut tells me at this time.
T-bone,
What could I show about the inside of a rod locker? What it feels like to have your fat ass stuffed inside of one. If you prefer the livewell I could make that happen as well.

Potter, what could you show me about the inside of a rod locker? May I suggest becoming more familiar with your livewell...
According to city of Sultan and Snohomish county Bass Pro has plans to build in a large site just outside of Sultan.. they got all the approvals.. Guess there thinking on that location is to attract east side and west side.. But Traffic will be horrible.. guess we will see if it happens

Dude im stoked about Cabelas coming to Marysville that rocks. I live in Marysville and If I need something quick I dont have many options. They might not have the best bass selection but trust me better than anything in Marysville, Everett ,Arlington,Lake Stevens, and... i could keep going I would have to drive to Three Rivers to get a look at some good gear.
Cabelas is trying to gain market share in bass fishing... They have stepped up with both FLW and TBF. True they have a way to go but at least they are showing a willingness to invest in bass fishing and in the NW...
