Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I'm just returning from my trip to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and wow!

Now, I'm pretty proud of the great smallmouth fishing we have in the Northwest, but the Great Lakes are on another level. After catching them basically nonstop, if you catch a three pounder you think it's the smallest fish you have ever caught. They are all the same size basically and all big. I never caught a true giant, with several high 4's and mid 5's but they are in there and it takes 7 pound smallmouth to get anyone excited who fishes there often.

I did learn some things I plan to bring back to the Northwest, like using a 1.25oz dropshot weight for heavy current and deep water. It was crazy being able to see them swimming down there in 30+ feet of water (thanks to zebra mussels) and drop it right on them and catch them as soon as it hit the water. We also did alot of jerkbait fishing and that was awesome for sheer numbers. They had just started to move up shallow and you would have several follow your jerkbait and one would swim up and just smash it.

This is the kinds of stuff we were fishing.

This was definitely one thing I wanted to cross off my bucket list and now I want to go back. We flew into the Buffalo airport and headed to the Niagra Falls area, which is a perfect place between the two lakes. If you are interested in going, this is a good site with info on the area. http://www.niagara-usa.com/

Sounds unreal! Thank for sharing.

Tyler, not sure if you realize this, but QuickDrops come in sizes up to 1 ounce, and they are much more compact than the weights you were using.  Wish I could get the stores up there to carry them.

Love the 1 ounce QuickDrops. Limit Out Marine stocks them.

Ha Ha, thanks Tag...I should have been more clear; I wish the stores around the Great Lakes would carry them...they would love them if they tried them.

Oh, gotcha, Marc. My apologies. That makes sense. I travel to the upper Midwest and Northeast frequently for work and am happy to drop off samples and a program if you'd like when I make it by applicable stores. I just returned from Pittsburgh (only two hours from Erie) but I'll be in Minnesota and Wisconsin the first week of June. Out of curiosity, do you work with any distributors who cover the Midwest that I could recommend if the dealer prefers to go that route vs. setting up a new vendor? Robinson Wholesale, Sports Specialists, Big Rock, Maurice, etc.? Let me know if I can help in any way!

How do you know he wasn't using QuickDrops?

Josh,

If you look closely at the picture of the smallmouth you can see he is using a huge cylindrical weight.

Tag,

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I don't have any distributors that serve those areas, so if you can put in a good word for me that would be great.  I prefer to deal with distributors, as I don't have time to deal with dealers, and this is why I don't sell direct to individuals also (which distributors prefer).  I really should put together some sample kits to use for marketing, but as you know I really don't try too hard to increase my business, though I should.  Send me your address and I will mail some samples if you don't mind doing this, but I really don't want to put you out.  Also send me your email address and I will email my distributor price sheet and terms.

Thanks a ton,

Marc

Hey Marc,

Thank you for the reply.  I am more than happy to help however I can.  I will be seeing Sports Specialists (fishing tackle distributor - approximately 30,000 SKUs) and Robinson Wholesale (Tackle Division covers 9 Midwest States) while I am in the Milwaukee area the first week of June.  They work with some of the larger retail chains in the Midwest in addition to the single-store independents.  If you are interested, can certainly help you explore the Big Rock Sports and/or Maurice Sporting Goods distribution angles for future, potential, terminal tackle planogram assortment placement opportunities with mass merchant retailers like Dick's, Bass Pro, Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Academy, Sport Chalet, as well as the independents.  I've always been a fan of the QuickDrops and would love to see them in more doors around the Country.  Will shoot you a PM and hope to talk soon.  Take care!

Tyler,

Amazing fish and thank you for sharing the story and breakdown from your trip.  I definitely need to make some time to get out fishing in that neck of the woods.  Truly world class.  Hope you get to make it back for some more phenomenal action!
