I see this affecting Whatcom Open participation for those that aren't local enough to justify an annual pass. Pretty lame! Something about this group wanting to do all of this simply because they want to doesn't seem legal. Maybe a law suit is needed.
Even though the article only mentions the city isn't there a separate group fronting this? I think that group should be identified as they are the ones causing all the problems. If I remember correctly, the city is backing what that group is presenting to them. Is that correct?

This is Bellingham in a nutshell, there typically isn't justification for anything that the city does. No 2-strokes, fee boat launch, 1 demolish for 1 new home policy, now a permit required? Nothing that city does would be legal anywhere else. I pretty much grew up on Lake Whatcom and would still live over there if it wasn't for their irrational municipality. The city is run by the Western Students that retire in Bellingham after they graduate.

The North Shore has some of the most enjoyable fishing I can remember but too bad I will probably never get to experience that again.

They have been trying for years to ban boats and shut down the launch.  Not sure the residents could afford the lake if you removed taxpayers money.  Just thinking

Do you need your boat inspected to fish Whatcom?  I've never fished it but have always wanted to.  I can see out of state inspections, but this is ridiculous.

Not at the exact moment but it sounds like a certainty this year.  My guess is they will start sometime around May.  There is a WDFW launch on the South end if you don't want to put up with this.  It is small and somewhat sketchy as far as launching, parking and break ins goes though.  Bloedel on the North end is such a nice facility that from what I understand was donated to the city under the assumption it would be free to the public forever.  This whole thing just seems wrong.  There is a website I will post later with the entire plan.  In it, they straight out say they want to inspect boats, can't afford it at the moment, so either the lake has to be completely shut down or they have to charge so they can afford to run the inspections.  Explain that logic to me? It is some separate Lake Whatcom Protection Management agency or something that is doing all this and using the city to help them.

To me, the bottom line is that if zebra mussels get into Washington State anywhere, they will be everywhere eventually.  Unavoidable once they get in the state.  Something besides boats will bring them into the lake.  So like you say, the focus should be on the state border, not Lake Whatcom.  I really think they are just using zebra mussels as an excuse.  If it wasn't them, it would be something else.  I mean, if drinking water quality gives you a reason to be able to kick boats off a lake, pick a culprit that more negatively affects water quality than zebra mussels.  Also, something closer to home would be nice.  I just don't get the logic behind this.  Seems like just stuffy people that think they are better than everyone else so that gives them to kick boats off of "their" lake.

Drinking water quality is NOT a reason to kick boats or people off a lake, it is also an excuse.

They may want the boats off the lake but they say nothing about parking our boats in the parking lot, maybe we should get there early and just plug the parking lot and then see what comes next. Instead of moaning about this problem let do something about it, silent protest for a few weekends.

The best thing to do is to call the city council members. Speaking with the newspaper would be great too. Government agencies are formed to protect the public not to restrain their enjoyment of natural resources and parks. Spending a quarter million dollars on this program is ridiculous and taxing boaters is not the way to pay for government waste. I for one will be calling council members to voice my opinion. This is disgusting.

4th of July weekend if you really want to make a statement.  Let me know what time we are meeting at the launch!

If this happens do not be afraid to pay with unrolled pennies

I thought about that also Matt, dumping X-amount of pennies (legal tender) in their laps would really bust their nuts.
