Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I want to try a new spinning reel for the 2016 season on my drop shot rod.  Looking for something very light.  What's everybody using out there?  Are there any most popular models?  Seems every time I read a post concerning spinning reels, or every time one is for sale, it's a different model and brand.  Seems to be no consensus.

I've been using US Reels model 180SX since they came out, and have been very pleased.

But now, they seem to be leaving the market.  With drop shot, a great drag is important, but pick up rate / spool diameter, not so much (when using 5lb line especially).  Extra spool is "ok", but not the end of the world.  Other things people care about?  Like bearings?  Are people gravitating toward Shimano and Diawa like in Baitcasters?

I'd love to find out.  Thanks!

I use the Daiwa Fuego 2000a.  Drag is silky smooth as is the retrieve.  Manages 6lb fluoro fine.  Comes with a spare spool if the owner still has it.  Unfortunately it's been discontinued for years and hard to source.

I use a discontinued Daiwa fuego in 2000 size as well. The newest model of Shimano Stradic is very nice. I just picked up a 3000 size model to use for small jigs a nd senkos as well as river fishing for salmon.

I asked a similar question awhile back and a ton of guys recommend the Shimano Stradic CI4+ Spinning Reels...I happen to get a 20% off coupon @ Cabelas and picked one up...glad I did...awesome reel!
Thanks guys. I'll try to bring up Joel's old post as well.

I'm curious, why a 3000 over a 2500?

I've got 5 of these reels--zero issues.  The 2500 & 3000 series are almost identical in weight so i would recommend the 3000.

Russ,

The ci4 is undeniably the gold standard. However... I dont need to spend $220 on a reel that i will be back-reeling anyway.

A very nice route is the pflueger supreme xt. You simply wont be any happier with a ci4 than you would a supreme xt, but your wallet will be $70 dollarslighter.

There are 22 reviews on pfluegers website, and every one is 5 out of 5 stars.

If i could choose for free, I'd go the ci4. If i have to pay, then Im going pflueger supreme xt, and Im taking my extra $70 down to limit out and purchasing some sunline sx1 braid, some fluro leader spools, gama split/drop shot hooks, and quick-drops and sniper bolts. Some yamamoto shad shapes would fit in that $70 too... Probably have $20 left over for gas.
Nice
Jake, can you tell me if these reels have continuous breaking, or if the handle back-rotates the spool to casting finger pickup position after flipping the bail back? Does that make sense?
Assuming I not back reeling.... :)
Its just a reel Russ. Its not a food processor. You stop reeling when the line is nearest the rod. Go to a local tackle shop and handle a few different ones. Take your rod in with you to see how it balances. Those xt's are lighter than ci4's. I do know that.

Good luck.

Continuous anti-reverse.

Thanks everyone. It's interesting reading all the specs online for these models, compared to what I have now. I found it interesting that the gear ratios have little to do with actual line pick up rates. I've found 4.3:1 reels that pickup more line than 6:1 reels because of spool diameters (I guess). And some smaller reels that are heavier than larger reels. Soo many choices now days. Anyhow, thanks again everyone.
