Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

As a marine mechanic and bass fisherman i am very animate about the use of ethanol stabilizers tell all my customers about the ill affects of  not using it and how much money it will add to there yearly expenditure on boat upk use stabilizers in should they not use stabilize there fuel year round. This being said even ritual use of ethanol/fuel stabilizers you may still have problems with youre boats fuel system. Just today i was reminded of this when my own boat succumbed to the plague of ethanol. nothing like coming in on youre main motor from I90 bridge to coulon on only 1000 rpms because the boat wont plane out. Weve all been there at one point in time but when the mechanics boat falls on its face its really embarrassing. i know of one place that sells ethanol free fuel in auburn. does anyone else know of other local stations that sell ethanol free fuel? If so tell youre fellow bassers and the community where to get it as to help us have productive days on the water and not draining youre wallets on repairs.

p.s.    where the hell were the fish when i did manage to fish a bit today before my boat crapped out on lake wa?

pure-gas.org.............you can find the ethanol free stations in Washington. I've always ran ethanol free gas in my boat as well as my generator and lawn mower.

I also use the Pure Gas app available. Shows you a list of ethanol free stations listed closest to furthest from your current location.

good to know. ill pass it on to fellow customers so they be try to be ethanol free

I don't mean to laugh, but you sound just like me.  I'm a small engine mechanice (1-35hp) who has  been through 100's of hours of emission and fuel related classes over the past 15 years, and I had the same problem at a tournament onLk.  Wa. like 2  years ago.  It's very humbling.  Than all the boaters flood you with advise...fun :)  Since I started using the gas in Auburn I've had no more problems, but I had to replace some fuel system parts and rebuild carb/fuel pump/etc...  The Puregas.com is the best website.  It's cool cause you can plot your way across the state when you travel to stay on the good gas.

Also, I think people have taken for granted the "quality" of fuel.  Safeway, Costco, Fred Meyer, and many others do not meet the industry standard (not required to either) for fuel additives.  The website toptiergas.com explains the difference between them. I've tested on my own that it cost the same to buy the more expensive gas from the crazy ol' man in Auburn and add Lucas Oil upper cylinder lubricant as it does to buy cheap "crap" gas over a 300 mile trip because of the lack of fuel economy.  The lack of additives, the poor quality of the fuel, the unknown age of the fuel (adds to the water content issues), the percentage of water due to absorption from the alcohol, and most importantly...the LOW BTU's due to the addition of the 10% alcohol add's up to loss of mileage.

I don't see huge power differences in my boat motor in terms of speed/hp cause I mostly travel at 45 mph to save gas (and my back), but I do think it runs smoother.  Also, my fuel lines no longer petrify.

I've heard people have some concerns that maybe their new fancy fuel injected 200+ motors are tuned to run on 10% alcohol, but to date, I've never run across anything to back that up.  They just run better!

speaking of fuel pumps, thats what caused my woes. what ever the corrosion blocker coating was that they used in the pump body on my 351 broke apart and clogged the carb inlet. go figure!!

Oh yah, I forgot...better Octane fuel is also part of the issue since you are taking the word of the gas station that it's fuel testing is current.  Buying higher Octane in a general sense does help, but mostly because Octane flashes off soo fast in a vented boat fuel system that the more you start off with...the more you end up with in your tank after it's been sitting there for awhile.  Not rocket science.  I've heard that people believe out there that all 92 Octane gas is alcohol free...No it is not.  Don't know if that rumor was started by a gas company or what, but not true.

My fuel pump still doesn't work perfect after rebuilding it.  I think it's ruined, but I'm too cheap to replace it to find out!

For all those who run to Roosevelt and Banks Lake, their is a pump in Ephrata that sells ethanol free fuel.

Eric, what are the most common problems with ethanol in how are boats respond?  What can anglers do when servicing our boats to improve the quality of our fuel system that may already be corrupted?

simple inspection of all the  fuel line looking for soft or spongy hose is a major key in the initial inspection. any hoses not proper should be immediatally changed. The new fuel line will be rubber but will also have a plastic liner inside to protect against ethanol breakdown and evaporation and or permeation. ive also just heard from the yamaha rep that any aluminum components that have started to corrode in the fuel system  (white powdery residue) will only get worse as time passes.stabil stabil stabil!! cant say it enough . mercury quik kleen is also a good product. just keep at monitoring youre system and as time passes im hoping that someone will come up with a do it all ethanol treatment thats bullet proof.
