Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I'm in the market for a new bow mount trolling motor, and I wanted to get some opinions on the best value in a 24V 70# motor. I've been looking at the Motorguide X3, and it seems like that is the best thing going in that price point. Not alot of reviews on them yet, but everything I've read so far has been positive. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

John Mark,

I would look at Tory's Minn Kota. I have nothing but good things to say about Minn Kota. On the flip side my current boat came with a motorguide, and it's already been in the shop once. I don't care for it one bit!

They all suck but I think the Minn Kota's suck less...

Kota
Go with a Minn Kota. I have owned 4 and never a problem with them. I have owned 3 motorguides and would never own another. Some guys swear by Motorguide, whereas all I have done is swear at them.....
I think the new versions of both are super comparable, but for straight up weed chopping, pulling your boat through the crap nothing beats the motorguide, the major drawback of the minn Kota is the slow start up, so weeds tend to get wrapped before the blades turn at 100%. The other thing I like is its way easier to change the rope and take the trolling motor on and off if you have issues. I have broke chords on both and minn jota almost impossible to change on the water. I think the mount is a bit more durable on the Kota, but with that plus comes the minuses I talked about.
I don't think you can go wrong with either but I would suggest you get a variable speed model over a 4 or 5 speed one.

How big of a boat do you have? I cant comment on the Motorguide X3. If you can go for a Fortrex 80 or bigger you wont be disappointed.

I have had a few different ones. Currently I'm running a 65lb thrust Motorguide Beast. It's an older model and I like it a lot. I am not a fan of the Motorguide Tour
Digitals that have the all metal frame pedals. The cable design and roller wheels in those pedals suck I've used two and they both fell of the rollers and eventually broke the cable all together! I had a cheap Minnkota Edge 70lb on my old boat and it worked great, but I really like having the variable speed and ability to remove the motor quick that my current Motorguide offers. This is just my opinion but the stock 3 blade machete prop that you get on a lot of motorguide is terrible. I replaced mine with a Safari prop and carry the little 3 blade in the boat as a spare. Don't know a lot about the X3.
I have an X3 on my boat have ran it hard this year no problems, it isn't variable speed, and at setting 1 it makes my boat fly.

Fixed it for you...

Knock on wood I haven't ever fallen off a boat. Let alone flew off one.
