Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I want to get some feedback about some ideas I have.  If you are currently in a bass club and you fish tournaments with 5-15 boats would you be interested in fishing in a series of tournaments open just to members of a club instead of fishing a series of tournaments with just your individual club. I'm the president of WBA located in Lynwood so I'm speaking mostly about Western Washington, but say we call it the western Washington club championship circuit.  All the interested clubs agree on a 6 tournament schedule and fish for $40 entry fee and $10 big fish option. Instead of 36 tournament weekends going on a year with roughly 10 boats per tournament there would be 6 Club level tournament weekends with upwards of 50 boats per tournament and it's still very affordable and you can win enough money to pay for your weekend of fishing. Point distribution of course could be done by each club however they want and the championship event of the circuit would be the club fish off where the top ten performers from the year in each club will represent their club as they go head to head with the other clubs.

Please comment and give me feedback

It's 2014 boys. A trip with the family to the movies costs $50 dollars.

There's no debate here. Build it and they will come. When I was a teenager I refereed soccer games for extra cash, and mowed lawns as needed.

I think you guys have some pretty good ideas and I believe if it's run well you could charge $10 or $75 and you will get the same guys. That big stringer idea is a great one. I think it's awesome that there is a group of you that are thinking creatively to fill a void for some anglers. Some guys sit around and complain about stuff and other's find creative solutions. Good for you guys! If it ends up that you come to the East Side I will come fish one with one of my son's.

I think Troy is probably closer to the truth on why certain guys won't participate or will poo poo your ideas. There are a group of anglers that simply don't want to compete or they are the passive aggressive type who really are competitive but don't want to admit it because they can't handle losing. There is nothing wrong with that at all. We don't all have to fish for the same reasons. Some dudes fish for fun and others for competition and fun. We already have a ultra competitive money circuit in NW Bass and no matter how hard Gary tries there is a certain demographic that just won't ever enter one of his events for a myriad of reasons. However, if cost is the main factor then how could you argue it wouldn't be awesome for those guys to have a big tournament/highly competitive/lower entry option.

I hope you guys make it happen!

I think what we need is more participation in TBF tournaments. Its only a $100 per event and $300 for the year. Its club against club and individual standings, plus run very professionally. Great way to learn about bass fishing in this state and an opportunity to take it to the next level. When I first joined the Washington Bass Federation back 1997 we averaged 50 plus boats per event. We need to get back to those levels in the Federation. Having a strong Federation is the way to protect our rights and resources against the state and federal fisheries managers with their hair brained, no limit on smallmouth ideas. For those that have not tried a TBF event, the only requirement is being in a club and signing up as boater/non boater pairs.

I agree with Doug that for a $100 entry per event and the opportunity to learn and advance TBF is a great option. We do have both big fish and big stringer option pots, and with increased participation the payouts could be substantial. Please consider fishing WSBF/TBF in 2015

I really like the idea. I think $50 is a reasonable entry fee for the number of tournaments proposed per year. There is another option as well to make it enticing. Money isn't the only payout we can consider. I'm not sure how difficult it is, but if we had money coupled with prizes like rods, tackle, oil, and other gear it might be possible to get sponsors for the events to increase the reward without increasing the up front costs. Maybe even a weekend fishing with one of our local sticks??? I'd value that quite highly.

I really like the idea of a mid-level tournament circuit. Something a novice like myself could participate in without being terribly intimidated which would allow me to learn about tournaments while competing and maybe even learning a thing or two about fishing. At the reasonable cost, if I wasn't able to complete the circuit there would be no crying... just a little disappointment. For $50 I consider it a good cost/benefit for the experience of competition for that single event.

I realize the cost can be difficult for some and not a problem for others depending on financial situations or desire to participate but there needs to be enough money brought in to make it a worthwhile mid-level tournament circuit. I think $50 hits that sweet spot while club events will continue to be lower cost with friendly competition and learning. I'd personally like to see more interaction between different clubs. Fish-ins with multiple clubs to spread knowledge and lift new guys up a bit. The benefit is better competition and participation.
