My Son's First Bass - Ever!

My Son’s First Bass

Thursday 07-05-12

My son and I headed to Lake Union this evening to fish for smallmouth bass.  He had mixed feelings about going.  This was most likely because his previous attempts at targeting bass (not very many times over the past several years) were skunkeroos and definitely not for lack of trying.  I told him that this was going to be the day for sure.  My only goal this evening was to do everything I can to help him get his first…

Senior Fishing Trip - Mon. 06-11-12

Senior Fishing Trip – Mon. 06-11-12

It didn’t seem too long ago that the group of seniors I take fishing had just wet their lines.  The clear, blue skies and mild temperature in the seventies combined to make for a great day of glorious fishing.  The only things we needed were to be in a great spot and to have a little bit of God’s favor shine down upon us like the sun’s rays.

Our intended spot was the immediate shore area close to the NE…

Son’s First Fish of the 2012 Season

Son’s First Fish of the 2012 Season

Saturday, June 2, 2012

One could not ask for a nicer day to go fishing or for a better opportunity to take someone fishing.

Objective: Help my son catch his first fish in a non-farm setting

Lake: Steel Lake

Fish Catching Potential: Pretty Darn Good

Earlier in the day, there was a fishing event for kids in which they enclosed the swimming area with a net and filled it with trout…

Senior Fishing Trip To Green Lake - 05-15-12

Senior Fishing Trip To Green Lake – 05-15-12

Destination: Green Lake

Quarry: Any willing fish

Bait Arsenal: Worms, Power Bait, Artificial Lures

I had another opportunity to take some seniors fishing again, and as excited as I was, they were even more excited than I.

Fortunately, the weather forecast of sunny skies and a temperature of 75 degrees F was spot on.

We arrived at the dock at about…

Fishing In Mexico Report Fall 2011

Fishing in Mexico

I was not sure if I would have the chance to fish in Mexico, but in case I did, I brought along a minimal “assortment of lures I thought were “best guesses” and universal in nature.  I brought along:

1)      Some of my salmon jigs, in various shades of pink, fuchsia (red) and purple

2)      Some of my inline spinners

3)      A variety of spoons including three Dick Nites

4)      A few buzz bombs

5)      Three…

Project Hammer

Project Hammer 06-14-11

I decided to take a short break from making another wooden lure and started on a minor project for my kids.  They both thought that Thor’s Hammer was a pretty cool weapon so I took a block of wood 7” in length and possessing a height and width of 3.5” and got started.

Unfortunately for me, I don’t have a table…

Senior Fishing Trip – Friday, May 27, 2011

Senior Fishing Trip – Friday, May 27, 2011

I was blessed to have the opportunity to take a couple of seniors fishing Friday, May 27, one lady and one gentleman.

We got to the lake at about at about 11:40 a.m. and I had them rigged, ready, and at the first spot by noon.

The only female angler of the group had a very nice bite rather quickly, but unfortunately, a true hook up did not materialize. She and I both watched the line move to the side and then went… Continue

My Daughter's First Salmon - 11-11-10

My Daughter’s First Salmon – 11-11-10

Today was the day! After a long while, I finally had a chance to go fishing. To make things even better, my daughter accompanied me and was excited to catch her first salmon. Honestly, as amped as she was, I think I might have been more excited than she. My primary goal today was to help her…

First Big Largemouth of 2010

First Big Largemouth of 2010

I decided to “hit up” my “home lake” on the way home at about 6:50 p.m. this evening and fortunately for me, there weren’t that many swimmers on the dock. The crankbait produced for me yesterday evening (caught a nice 2 lb. bass at about 9:20 pm) and so I went with it again since the conditions were the same and the time frame relatively close.

About ten minutes later I felt a light hit and instinctively went through…

My Experimental Rod Holder for My Solo (Steelhead) Outings

I made a very simple contraption that will hopefully assist me when I hook into my first steelhead. Given the rule, if I understand it correctly, that they must be kept in the water unless they are being retained when legal, I have often wondered how I could take a photo of the fish, while still holding the rod in one hand (I am not going to do the, “hold it by the teeth method,” no way), keeping it in the water, AND trying to hold a camera. The simplest way would be to have a buddy around to… Continue

Take a Senior Fishing - A Story for the Winter Blues

I woke up the day after Christmas 2009 to a crisp 31° F. It served as a frosty reminder that winter has just begun and I am willing to wager that many anglers have already put away their gear until spring. Except for the most hard core of anglers, these anglers try to find ways to stave off the fishing blues. Some frequent online forums or learn the craft of making lures. Others do it by reliving and remembering the memories of the past season.

It could be a new personal best 7.5 lb.… Continue

Took My Dad Fishing for Salmon

Dad’s Fishing Derby (as he calls it)

I took my dad fishing for salmon this past Friday. He didn’t want to go fishing initially but much to my pleasure and surprise, he changed his mind.

We found a section of the Green River in Auburn, which I missed during my initial scouting trip not too long ago. I have never fished this section of the Green River either, but its traits were perfect for us. It was a flat, clear area that was convenient to fish from the… Continue

The Reward of Fishing Less Than Ideal Conditions

Another Trip to Lake Union Tuesday, 10-28-09

I had the fortune of getting out of work a bit early today. Despite my suspicions that the passing period of cold and rainy weather would likely turn the fish off and lower my chances of success fishing from the shore, I decided to go bass fishing anyway. Because this was not a planned trip, I only had two trunk rods and a motley but limited selection of lures.

Poor weather conditions + Limited lure selection = Slim… Continue

My Joker Crankbait Tuesday 09-15-09

IB’s Joker Bait Tuesday 09-15-09

One of my all-time childhood favorite superheroes is Batman, and so I thought I’d make a crankbait with Batman colors. However, I realized that Batman’s colors were a bit dull. I figured his archenemy’s colors (green hair, purple attire, red lips and black eyes, etc.) might make for an interesting choice.

I had a little assistance from the Bush and Obama jokers.…

Islandbass’s Baby Bass – Crankbait #2 Completed

I finally got around to completing it. This is the same one that caught a largemouth bass while I was field-testing it when it was still unpainted.

Before

This time, I used a super cheap airbrush that I bought a long time ago and forgot about until I did a little spring-cleaning in the garage. The dark green strip was done by dabs with a hand brush.

After

This is what I… Continue

Another Father Vs. Daughter Challenge 07-10-09

Shark Bait Scores Again

My daughter and I had another face off today. She started with a spinnerbait and I with my first homemade crankbait. After no fish through the first 15 minutes, I switched to my drop shot rig and casted it out with a 3” Senko, wacky rigged.

As soon as my weight reaches bottom, my daughter snags her lure in the riprap and is unable to free it. She hands me her rod and takes mine and during the exchange I can’t help to think a smallie is going to nail… Continue

Another Crankin’ Story by IB 07-09-09

I recently started making my second crankbait. This one was made using the through-wire construction method, which I found to be a bit more challenging. I also decided to try a slightly different lip angle and use more weight to slow the rise of the crankbait, just to see what that would do.

I had to test the bait because I figured there would be no point in painting it if it didn’t work properly.

I got to the lake’s… Continue
