First fish early! put your boat in the water in the dark and be at your first spot as it is just STARTING to get light (just remember safety first, know your water and take a spot light if you need to). This is a very productive time of day! I tend to run and gun more early in the day when the bass are normally more active. As the sun comes up move to shaded area to extend the first light bite. Remember that bass tend to be on the edge of cover early in the morning, like docks & pads. One of my favorite places to fish early is shallow rocks and points. As the sun comes up and the day starts to get warm start fishing the shade under docks or logs or pitch to thicker cover. Now the day is getting hot now is a good time to fish shaded areas around the lake. Look for shade on spots that are good other times. The bass will hold in the shade on the hottest part of the day. And you can catch some big bass doing this. it’s a good time to cover water. If the bass is there they should hit your lure. Start hitting many shaded spots will up your odds of catching more and bigger bass.

Mike you are dead on!
It is also a great time to try more than one type of lure on a spot. I start with plastic like a tube jig for a couple casts then run a crank or buzz thru the spot. I always start with plastic because you can make several cast before pushing fish off the spot with the noise.
I always shut the big motor down with the boat facing the spot. That has less wake than any other way. The wake tends to move off to the sides.

Thanks Roger, I am going to have to show my wife your post because she doesn't understand why have to leave sometimes at 3:00 a/m in the summer to get to the lake before light. This is my favorite time of day. I would like to add that stealth is a big part of the early morning as well. Keep movement in the boat to a minimum and conversations with your fishing buddies to a whisper.

Good tips Roger. I'll have to make it down to silver and try them out with you this spring.

I guess as I got older I tended to get going later in the day and look for those real nice warm parts of the day when it's so fantastic to float around and fish around. So your advice that if I take the easy way out I should address you pointers about chasing the shade is right on! I'm with Tag, thanks for the tips and for getting my brain excited about the upcoming season.
