I know a lot of you have some good stories on home owners that have came out yelling, swearing, throwing stuff at your boat and such so lets here them!...

I bring this up because I just had one happen to me...

I was out on Lake Stevens yesterday flipping docks. I pulled up to one of my favorite spots and starting to move up close to a dock and an old guy came out of the house. He looked like he wanted to talk and tell me a fishing story or how he saw a big one under his dock or something so I said "good evening sir". Right as soon as I get the words out I knew he wasn't happy. He starts going off on me telling me I am tresspassing and how I am the most inconsiderate jack arse he has ever seen and a bunch more cursing and yelling at me. So I tell him what I am doing is perfectly legal and if he has a problem to call the sheriff. He then says he is going to have to get the hose and spray me down then. He then procedes to get the hose walk to the edge of his dock. I again tell him I have just as much right to the water as him and I am again, legal. He points the hose at my face and I tell him I am only going to ask him once not to. He then srays down my boat and me. I continue to fish around him and he throws the hose towards my line in hopes to get wrapped up in it. I then back the boat up and call the sheriff. He responds and goes to the guys house. I told the sheriff it is not a big deal but I am going to fish that particular dock again and he needs to be told what is right and that he can't do that.

I did not throw my jig on his dock, mess with his boat, and was completely respectful. Does everybody think they own everything these days? I don't get it. I have had kids, adults and just about everything come and ask me about fishing and tell me fishing stories from their dock but this was different. It turned my good fishing day into something negative.

Just for anyone that wants this. I also called the game warden and gave him the address along with this RCW so he didn't have to look it up.

RCW 77.15.210
Obstructing the taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife --Penalty is a gross misdemeanor and or jail time.

I have had this also happen while duck hunting (people coming out and scaring birds off so I can't get them or yelling at me).

I ran into this a crazy home owner this evening. I was chucking one of my favorite lures up near his shoreline. He was doing some yard work or something, and started watching me cast. One cast really got his attention because it landed 1 inch on the sand of his land. His first comment, "Does that have a hook on it? " I said yes it does. Thats when the 5 minute conversation began. He said he didn't want me casting in his swimming area because his kids swim there and he didn't want me leaving hooks behind. I said I don't plan on leaving hooks, and if I did hook your dock I would unhook it and then leave quietly. He said well thats the thing, you are supposed to stay over 50 feet back from my property. I told him I was fishing public water. He said all the water near his shoreline and dock 50feet OUT was private property. I told him I didn't have the RCW on me, but if he wanted I told him to call the sheriff. He told me I needed to study up on my homeowner rights. HAHA.
We kept going back and forth. Its easier for me just to type it out ;)
Him: I never have a problem with the trout fisherman, they always stay outside the area, its always you bass guys.
Me: I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm fishing public water.
Him: This Ain't texas, we don't have resivors here.
Me: (thinking WTF) Whats that got to do with anything?
Him: You are supposed to stay off my property.
Me: I'm not on your property, call the police if you want to know the laws.
Him: What If I started casting my steelhead gear in your direction, and trying to hook you?
Me: I was casting towards shore, not you. (reaching down for the swimbait) I have a 5 ounce trout right here with a big ol treble on it if you want to play that game.
Him: What if I stood in front of your house for a long period of time and told you it was public property.
Me: I'd be fine with that, its public property just like this lake.
2 more minutes go by
Me: Well I'll be back next week so we can talk it over again if you want.
Him, (walking away) oh ok

Theres some more great remarks, but I can't remember right now. I'll be printing out the laws and keeping a couple copies on me from now on.

How about a fish in on Lake Stevens and everyone prepares with water baloon launchers. He called you out, now its time to bring the mighty armada of bass fisherman. Oh and no Rangers, we like to be on time with our attacks!

I'm guessing that the idea is if they own waterfront, they own the water too? Flippin idiots. Only run I have had was a homeowner charged out on her dock and told me it was a swimming area..not a fishing area. I politely told her the "swimming" area was at the park...the lake is public and I could fish around her dock, but I'd bypass it next time. Now if someone hosed me down...not sure how I'd handle that. Well handled Nick

I had two instances last year alone. The first one me and a friend were fishing a small public pond. It was the first time I had been there and the second time my buddy had but his time was the year before. Anyway, we are fishing along the bank and here comes a guy down to the edge of the water with a shotgun over his shoulder. He started saying stuff like what are you doing here, I thought I told you guys not to be here and to never fish here. Says you are going to kill all the fish in the lake and eat them. After we informed him that I had never been there and it wasn't us he had talked to, and we fished C & R only. He then started mumbling under his breath and said how certain people go there and catch and eat all the fish. He was being a complete racist dick at that point but we just ignored him and moved on. After we got down the shore a ways farther, he finally walked back up to his little shack he called a home.
The second time I was on Lake Chelan and we were staying at a house on the lake. It was me, my brother in law, my daughter who was 5 at the time and my nephew who was 4. We were fishing our way back to the house and it was getting dark. We were having a great time though catching fish on top water and letting the kids real em in. We came to this house which was like 7 houses away from where we were, and it was dark then. This guy comes out with one of those million candlewatt type lights and shines it in my face telling me to get the f*** out of there and what are we doing there anyways. I told him we were fishing and please turn the light off. He said what are you fishing for you can't fish here. I again asked him to turn the light off. He just kept spotlighting us and yelling things at us. I told him look buddy we are here with our kids and just having fun and please turn the light off. I was obviously getting pissed off but trying to hide it because of the kids. Just when I was about to lose it and invite him to the end of his dock to discuss it, he turned the light off and went back in the house. I am not a fighter but I will speak my mind when I am being challenged like this guy was doing. In this case I didn't because of the kids, and my brother in law even commented as we pulled away he was surprised I didn't get more aggresive with this guy because he was being such a dick and was really in the wrong. This guy had one of those 30 foot fast boats up on a lift with a cover on it. The thought did run through my mind to take stinky squaw fish and throw it under there for him to enjoy later, but I didn't. I can't say that if this guy tries the same thing again this year that I won't.

Oh well, some people are just idiots and need to learn their laws. Especially if they live on a body of water no matter what size, that is open to public fishing. It's like people that move next to an airport and then complain about the noise. You knew it was there before you moved so shut up.

I was in a simular situation a few years ago at lake whatcom but it didn't invlove a water hose. I was bed fishing next to a man dock when he came out and yell at me telling me to get off his property or he'll call the sheriff. at the time I didn't know my rights so I left his dock. 15-20 minute lataer a sheriff pulled up next to my boat when I was fish a dock near by.. I thought the home owner really called him. but he was there to check if i had any life jacket and etc. I later ask him the rules about fishing dock. He told me it is legal to fish as close as I can because the water is open to the public. as long as I don't touch his dock or walk on his property. After that I'm always fish that guy dock. I guess he saw me talking to the sheriif and he know I or anyone else has the right to fish his dock. So, keep fishing the dock guys, you have the right too, it is legal. Just don't touch his property.

The same goes for salmon fishing in public creek or river. My friend have a co-worker who owns property on a creek and told him that the creek is open to the public. Three feet inland from the water is state property, so you can legallly walk down a creek threw people back yard and your not tresspassing, as long as your within three feet of the creek. He had people fish in his backyard and the sheriff couldn't do a thing about it. Keep fishing guys, were not breaking any law.
