all you guys that have been drop shotting giant smallies out of lake washington all winter, I am envy you, but its that time of year again to pick up your flipping/pitchin jigs and start hitting that cover. I know from several tough springs outings on Black Lake in Thurston County that once the water starts getting into the mid 50's, which I hear it is, it can get pretty awesome flipping jigs, I like the 3/8 oz heavy cover jig by jewel, which has a small profile, in either a peanut butter and jelly color with a green craw trailer, or a black on black jig. Fish them around any logs just off the shore, and around the docks. I like to approach the docks paralleling the shore as close as I can. If the sun is up and warm, the fish will position themselves under the dock right where it meets the shore. I have caught fish up to six pounds in water less than a foot deep. From there work you way to the front of the dock. Pitch every few feet, let the jig rest a few seconds, pop it, rest, and again.

Black lake is special because you have that chance at getting that huge smallie or largemouth on any cast. Dont let the lake frustrate you, because it will at times, but you hit it at the right day early in the year, and the bite will be on. If you see the schools of perch, and you will with the ultra clear water early in the year, fish around them. Fish will usually be in the immediate area on different ambush areas.

Another plus in the spring is, the best fishing is usally between 9 in the morning till about 6 at night. When the sun is beating that water.

Let me know how you do. If I was home thats the lake I would be on this time of year.
