The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I am looking at 2 boats right now, one has a 2000 optimax and the other a 2001 (i think) HPDI. both have been cared for farily well from what I see, just don't know any good or bad history on the cpmparison of the two.
Any cautions or is there a clear winner to go with. I want reliability and fuel economy, well as much as I can expect.
Need advice please of what to look for before I ge real deep into a deal.

Ron, That iis correct they have been with the XS (coil problems)

I think the coil problems were with the Pro XS models of Mercs. not the straight Optimax motors and not the 2000 year model.

Sparky, I could probably get you in first week of Feb and get you a quote on the annual service.

Both are good motors and yes the Optimax is faster than the HPDI. The E-tec oil is almost twice as expensive as the Yama lube and about 10-15% higher than the merc oil. They have both experienced blown power heads in some cases, but as Shawn stated I would have a good mechanic take a view of both on the computer. Phils comment about burning a lot of oil on the Yamaha is dead on and just okay on fuel. Of all the mercs I have seen XS they seem to get pretty good fuel mileage - alot depends on how you drive it. The last two years Mercs have experienced coil problems on the Opti's but after speaking to Merc about two weeks ago they are confident thay have worked out the bugs. I suggest you do you your homework and check them out really well. If you need help with this our shop Limit Out Performance Marine in Auburn will be opening in about two weeks.

I would also suggest that before you fully commit to buy that you take the boat to a mechanic and have them put it on the computer. This will give you fault history - pretty much will tell you everything you need to know about the motor including hours.

How many hours are on the motors?

UH OH....Ford Vs. Chevy debate

All I can say is those early years of DFI engines, they all had minor issues. The Optimax is a winner in my book, as from my experiences it get great gas mileage, plus it seems like when you need tech help on the go, there are more Mercury techs out there. They are both great motors, but Mercury is probably going to be your best bet. What is the price difference between the two??

Also the Mercury motors have the smart chip that provide lots of helpful info. Like a rev limiter alarm, miles to empty, RMP guage ect.

I have had Yamahas and Mercs. I will tell you, and im sure there will be some argument but the Optimax will out perform the Yammi's. Ive been in tournaments where 250 horse HPDI's have blasred off two boats ahead of me and passed them up. Mercs are FAST! I have a 225 Optimax and it will Run 74 MPH GPS with a light load. It will run 70-71 tournament loaded. As far as fuel economy the same goes. I have plenty of friends and people I know that Have Yamahas that will tell you the same thing. Im not bashing Yamahas they are a fantastic motor, my dad swears by them and I look up to him a ton. Im just saying what I have experienced first hand. I am a Mercury junkie for life!!! What size motor are you looking at? My Buddy Paul Hall has the 250 pro XS and theres not a boat on the water that will touch him. He runs about 75-76 GPS light fishing load and a little under half tank, and will run 72-73 GPS tourney loaded.
