Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hi everyone. I am new to Washington from Florida and I have no idea how to fish in these waters. I will be doing the majority of my fishing in the south sound area from Des Moines south. Any help regarding live and artificial baits and techniques would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Phil

If you want to try something other than live bait trolling for Salmon on down riggers particularly Coho I would go to your local tackle shop and pick up some White Hoochies, green glow Coho Killers, and some Brads Super Cut Plugs. Fish them about 4 ft behind a dodger or flasher down 50ft and you should find some Coho if they are running. I have never fished in the area you are asking about but these are pretty standard Coho baits throughout the sound and out in the Ocean as far as I know. Spencer is on point with the spinning herring, but I have gone away from it mostly out of laziness and the success I have had with lures.

Salmon I take it? Well if you could get a down rigger that would be a good choice. A 9'6" Medium Salmon rod. With a Penn 209m Levelwind With 20-25 lb Berkley Big game. Use That all the way up to a Good size barrel swivel. From the barrel swivle tie a 9 foot 20 pound leader, with two 4/0 gamakatsu octopus hooks (no barbs) Grab a herring. Dead that is, and the first hook through it's bottom jaw out the top of it's head. And Half moon the bait and run the last hook through the lateral line and out the side. This will give it a spinning action in the water. If you can't get fresh live herring, go to a store and look for frozen herring, green lable will do fine. The day before you go out take it out of the freezer and let it defrost, Then put them in something that will keep them cold. Get Rock salt and pour it over them when they are done thawing. This will keep the bait from coming off the hooks. Here's the kind of hooks you should use. These Leaders are sold anywhere like Sportman's Warehouse an Sportco inFife. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=00177....

I joined the Puget Sound Anglers, South Sound group when I first moved here. They meet monthly at Tacoma Outboard Association in T-Town. You'll meet a bunch of great people, they have guest speakers every month and you're sure to find fishing friends. If you launch out of Des Moines, you can head down to Commencement Bay and fish what they call the "Slag Pile" where the Yacht Club sits, troll pass the marina and along the Point Defiance Park edge to the Narrows and back. That's where most people start. Most people troll the ebbs and flows, but jig the slack tides. Both work well if your patient and well geared. But it gets really busy there. I like the Gig Harbor side, to the bridge not as many boats over there usually. Point Defiance Boat House has a hotline you can call to see where they are catching daily and he gives you the tides as well. Good number to have in your phone when your fishing T-Town. Everyone says green everything, but I use a white flasher with green strips, a grey and black hoochie with red eyes, with a herring strip soaked in a brine tucked up inside the skirt of the hooch for the Gig Harbor side and always get my fish. Watch your downrigger ball size in Commencement bay. Too light and you'll have too much slack in your gear and always be untangling. Tides really move weird in the fish bowl there. Hope that gets you started. Have fun, be safe and ignore the dolts. Welcome to Washington.
