Has anybody had an opportunity to put side imaging to the test? What do you like and what do you not like. I'd like to hear some first hand experiences and maybe see it in real time before I invest in a unit. With Lowrance as an option now, can anyone help shed light on the adantage of Humminbird vs Lowrance?

I just bought the 997si combo and I really like what I see. I still use Lowrance for bottom sonar and use the side imaging for the better look on the bottom and I can cover alot of area as far as structure in a short amount of time. I spent alot of time on the net this last winter and read alot on the humminbird. I think the people that have had problems with there sideimageing dont understand how to work it . It is a huge learning curve but in due time it really pays off. If I was looking to buy right now I would wait till the Lowrance came out and see what it has to offer. One thing I do like about the humminbird is the updates, which Im sure the lowrance is the same way. The best thing I can tell you is read alot on each unit before you buy. good luck

Thanks Marc, It sounds like maybe the best investment is in the HDS system, w/ a wait and see on the side imaging.

Although none of us have it yet, the Lowrance Side Viewing will just be a transducer component add-on to their regular High Definition units they are now making. For those of us that have used Lowrance GPS for years, now all our waypoints will be useable for side viewing as well as vertical sonar use. Everything will be networked together making the system more versatile. The new Lowrance HD units have an awesome picture with far more power and less interference due to the built-in broadband digital technology, and the sonar transducers are also dual frequency that allows both a wide view sonar beam and a narrow beam for detailed bottom pictures. I'm really looking forward to the Side Viewing by Lowrance!

Thanks for the feedback! Sounds like it is still too soon to invest in this technology.

I like my SI alot!! But I do have to say that Lowrance has the 2D Sonar advantage, so thats why I have a Lowrance on the trolling motor and a HB at the console.

I have both types on my boat. Humminbird 997si Likes you can find rock piles a sunkin boats like they say. Dislike cannot see fish on it like the lowrance if your not moving faster than 3 miles per hour the unit doesnt work right GPS mapping is better on the lowrance.
