Aaron,
True that I can understand. And the club did make money from the open. I just dont think its right that becuase fish werent caught, that they should make double the profit. Non profits work by holding fundraisers (Opens) and getting grants (dues), and if the state wants to drop them more money (sponsors) then so be it. Its just hard to see entry fees beyond what the clubs cut that they were already going to get for holding the open, as being a benefit to the club. And if they held an event that would benefit the fisherman, in turn the club would benefit twice fold. probably getting more people the next year for the same tournament.
I was encouraged to know what the people who fished the tournament actually thought of the way it was run, and the money given the way at the end. I dont know if there has ever been an open format tournament before where 0 fish were caught, and if there was does anyone know what the club did with the payout money from the event? I am just trying to get the ball rolling to help the club here. I know Im not a member and I am not trying to step on anyones toes, but If half the payout money was all that was paid out, that means that the club got their cut, plus half of what was supposed to be paid out along with the big fish money.
Fishing clubs are and should be run as a non profit organization. If there is extra money left over from a tournament, which the club wouldnt have made otherwise, then that money should be spent in another way...Here are some ideas:
1. Perhaps another open tournament with a reservation only to those who signed up to the CCBC Silver Lake Open 2011, with no entry fees and payouts being the left over money.
2. Or for the 2012 Open, they could roll over the money, and if you were one of the 27 boats entered in 2011, and had the biggest bag of those boats, there would be a separate payout.
3. Donate the money to a charity (men with prostate cancer)
4. Hold a big barbeque with like a pig roast and live band, after a family fun day of fishing inviting those teams and the club to a lake for a day, giving away trophies at the end.
5. Donate the money to fix a boat ramp, I know black lake needs a new one real bad!!!
These are just a few ideas, and No the club doesnt have to act on them, I just thought it be a fair suggestion. If nothing like any of things hasnt ever happened in the past, well maybe its because nothing like this has ever happened.
Another issue I heard about when I was talking to a friend of mine, was throwing around the idea of moving the tournament to a later part of the year...I think the beauty of fishing a tournament where you have to knock the ice off the eyes of your rods is that one bite, one fish can win the tourney. Its not everyday a tournament comes along with that possibility.
I know Im just a guy 2000 miles away throwing some ideas out there, and again apologize in advance if I hurt anyones feelings. Its just I care about the sport, about the competition, but most of all about the people I fish with. Hope everyone keeps catching them.
