The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I'm going to share an experience with you guys and I know what most of you think. I wanna here some feedback from you all and just tell me if I'm out of line or nuts!
Most of you know that I fished the Memorial tournament last week. Fun as hell by the way. This area is on the Columbia River and the area I fish is by the mouth of the Okanogan river. As I was traveling up the Okanogan river I couldn't help but notice a giant fishing boat . One that you would see in an area like Puget sound or Alaska. It had huge nets hanging from the sides and all over inside. The boat had large orange flags on it that said Research! I didn't think much of it at first. So for most of you that don't know, there is an amazing Salmon run of Kings and Sockeye . There was at least 100+ salmon boats out in the mouth of the river. Most of which launch out of Brewster. I also launched out of Brewster. When I came in to trailer my boat the fish checker was there at the launch. As we pulled in he said " how did you do?". We said we did pretty good! About fifty or so fish. He said what???? He thought we caught that many Salmon. We told him that we were Bass fishing and asked how everyone was doing out there. He said not worth a damn. 70 boats checked and only one fish caught. We asked whats going on. We used to just knock the hell out of them out here. He asked if we saw the RESEARCH BOAT. We said yeah and he informed us that it was an Indian net boat. The Natives have strung thier nets across the entire mout of the Okanogan and a few other spots in the Columbia and there just arent any fish he said. "They don't have a chance". So I just held it in knowing I can't do a damn thing about it. And then my brother called me tonight and said he went out Salmon fishing out there again and same thing only worse! No fish again and nobody was doing any good. They had the nets drug across the mouth again and there were 9 guys on the boat. 1 Native and 8 white guys. They were pulling the nets in full of fish. They were keeping everything that came in the nets, Bass, walleye, and Salmon. I don't even know what to say. Its sad for one. Pisses me off for two and its just plain bullshit! I understand the history and tradition but to me its just plain raping the waters.
When I grew up there, it wasn't that bad. They didn't have the nets out across the mouth . There was a lot of snagging with giant treble hooks but not the complete destruction that there is now. Honestly, If I had the time I would go take care of that Research boat in the middle of the night. I guess I just respect the fish and water too much. Tell me if I'm out of line or if you agree.

Sonny Rider- YOU ARE RACIST!!!!!!!!!!! You should let anyone who has been wronged EVER walk all over you forever and feel bad about while they do it. Didn't you know, that's what it means to be just an American. ;)

Sorry for spamming up the blog post HAHA

To add to my other post- Democraps aren't the only problem. Its both the dem's and repubs. Everyone is in it for themselves regardless their affiliation. As long as they The system is so far F'ed that i doubt it can be taken back without something major happening. I would say get someone in charge like R. Paul or M. Huckabee but i doubt they would be able to really change things dramatically. ........??????? What can we do???

Sessler-Christine or (Chris on her last posters). Its bad when you have to change your name a bit to try to not let people know your the same person.....anyway if you noticed a few years back, when they had the recount 3 times and magically more votes just showed up.....that's how she's still in.
I think its about time for all the BS to stop. Whaling netting and all others. If you want to do things your people did in the past do it like they used to do it or not at all.

If you want to catch a whale get in your wooden you hand carved and used that spear and hold on. Same for fishing get in your original stuff and have a ball.

I would like to know how its legal for them to keep the amount of other fish they keep ie Bass, walleye. Do they have a free pass on everything that swims?????

I just found out that at the Thursday night barbecue for the tournament there will be representatives from the tribe that will be available 1 on 1 for comments. I also found out that they are having a much higher mortality rate than expected. (no sh**) They are however donating a minimum of $1,000.00 to the tourney and are saying that once the hatchery is in full production that we may be able to fish two runs.

It also sounds like there are other tribes that are trying to get in on this body of water also. This all sounds like bad news to me.

I am C-Ride's brother. I am the one that was fishing last Thursday when the boat pulled 50 yards down stream of me and strung the nets right at the back of my boat. I immediately saw my fish finder go from completely full of fish to none. My day was over. I then watched as they took over an hour to get the fish from the net to the boat. I watched as they picked all fish no matter what kind out of the net an threw them on to the steel deck of the boat. I did not stick around for longer than the hour to see what they released but all I know is I see fish die in good catch and release situations and there is no way anything they released was surviving. On another note; in my appinion NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO ANY GAME ANIMAL OR FISH. I work hard to catch fish and kill deer and elk. I also put alot of time and money into conserving these animals and fish. I feel like I am entitled to an OPPORTUNITY. In other words get out your hand made throw nets of the 1600's and go fish but don't drag a net across the river stealing hundreds of fish out from under me as I try to catch my limit of 2 for the day on one rod. I am not racist I think we are all the same. They should be treated exactly the same as me. Untill this world realizes that giving any special treatment to people based on ethnicity or race contributes to a racist society we will never be rid of racism.

Did you take pics? This sort of abhorrent behavior and poor ecological practice should be documented and presented to the panel(s) that make the decisions or work with these tribal/commercial entites and try to police or at least monitor their conduct.
BTW, I believe the tribes have the right to use lethal force if their livlihood is threatened, so employing hail bays or even threatening to use them, on a public forum is not the best path to take. Maybe call PETA. They don't give a damn if anyone agrees with them or not. They just do it!!!

I just posted info that was at the meeting. I've fished the pool since it was opened several years ago, and have been on the water nearly every weekend during the first 2 months of the season each year. The first time I saw the net boat, I was pissed like every other fisherman up here. My biggest concern was that it was an all tribal fish fest on that boat, and everything caught was kept. I found out though, that the tribe has contracted this boat from a guy that is non-tribal who has done this for years and seems pretty legit on his practices. Actually, last year I watched them pull up the net and check each fish out carefully and release the entire catch (including a walleye). I couldn't figure out why, so I pulled over and chatted with him. He said at that time, they were just testing a more fish friendly net. Whether you, I, or anybody agrees or disagrees with whats happening, there is going to be more and more tribal harvest of chinook in this stretch. Guaranteed. Also, they've (Colville Tribe) completed the final phase of a spring chinook hatchery just above the bridge in Bridgeport, which will be going in starting next year. I anticipate all sorts of new restrictions on that stretch of river once it's up and running. The future doesn't look promising.

Ah, the beauty of America. The ability, the right, and the FREEDOM to have so many opinions, ideas, and views. I'm with you C-ride. I have come across research nets before, and all I every seen from them was death and destrction. I pulled one up on Lake Wash. before. It was supposed to be for salmon research. No salmon in the net, but plenty of dead smallies, carp, perch, and squaws. How could killing that many fish be for the good???? It definitely left me wondering.

As to tribal indian rights, I'm all for them following the local and state fishing laws. If they feel they need 6,000 salmon to feed the tribe, then let the tribe participate in buying enough gear, boats, bait, etc... and head down to the river and fish like the rest of us.

As to commercial fishing guys, let them make a living like the rest of us, but manage it resposibily.

Mark
