Go to home depot and get some PVC pipe, the airlines shouldn't be able to screw that up.

I have a tube that can hold up to 6-7 rods that you can use. I think you can also lock it with a small padlock.  shoot me a pm.

The Homo Depot in Spanaway gives me their cardboard carpet spools for free. They keep them near the  northeast door heading outside towards the gardening crap.

Not to rain on anyone's parade...but the airlines broke 3 of my rods that I shipped in a homemade 4" pvc pipe tube.  They removed the end cap (screw on) and pulled out the rods by their tips and broke the tips off, then shoved them back in and sent them with the plane for me to discover when I arrived.  Never say Never!

Hope your results are better than mine. 

I prefer to ship my rods by FEDEX with insurance to my destination these days.  I have had airlines refuse to allow me to even send 7-foot rods in rod tubes.

Just a heads up to anyone who plans on taking rods with them on a plane, DONT FLY UNITED!(unless you plan on mailing your rods anyway). I didn't check their baggage policy before I bought the ticket, which was my bad, but they dont accept anything with a single dimension over 64". I flew Southwest last year, and had no problems taking my rods, and they dont charge anything for baggage. Lessons learned... So now I will be shipping the rods down in a home made pvc tube.

Any input on shipping companies? UPS, FedEx, USPS? I usually use UPS because I've never really had any problems with them, but I've never really compared rates between each one.

I've shipped about 5 rods with USPS, and had one problem. I had one rod that I shipped to a fellow in the south that should have shipped in 7 days. It turns out it took near a month, but eventually did get there. I always get insurance, but have never had a pole broken.

Use ABS pipe its tougher and flexible, glue a cap on one end, and the other, an adapter with a screwed cap

Lessons learned...If I would have checked into United Airlines baggage policy just a day or two earlier it would have only cost me $26 to get the rods down there in time, but instead it cost me $80. Next time I'll just fly Southwest again, and not have to pay to take em with me. The trip got a little more expensive, but I'm pretty sure when I'm out there haulin in pigs with my brother, in 80+ degree weather, it will all be irrelevant.
