What do you run for your starting battery? Do you run all of your electronics, pumps, etc off of it? After an in depth conversation with electronic master Marc M., I purchased a Die Hard Group 31 Marine battery with 1125 CCA and 205 RCA. It insures my Lowrance depth finders down "flinch" when I start my big motor and turn them off/on as well as power everything I got hooked up properly now. I have no issues with not having enough power.
It was pretty expensive but very much needed ($280 including tax), that's about as much as a new rod or reel... I would recommend if you run a lot of stuff off of your starting battery to step up and buy a better battery, you won't be sorry!

I have had plastic trays break when in rough water, especially at the screws. If you don't get caught in very rough water, you probably won't have a problem with plastic trays, however in rough water when that 80 pound battery bounces up and down it is too much to expect plastic to withstand the abuse.
John, that is not the battery tray I bought from Cabela's. That model is plastic. I bought it directly from the Lacey store; not the catalog. Maybe they don't carry it anymore although I just bought it on New Years' Day. It was aluminum and mounted with 4 screws (hole in each corner). It also had a nice heavy duty strap and stainless buckle.
ciao,
Marc
Thanks Marc. Charlie just picked up a battery and aluminum tray from Cabelas yesterday.
great topic. I've always owned trojans and my front fish finder will shut down sometimes when I crank the starting battery. Although I cant fit a group 31 in my tracker since I went to a 24v system. Does anyone know what kinda lifespan the cabelas batteries have?
