Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I encountered breaking , surfacing smallmouth on lake samammish this Saturday, I tried topwater, Spook Jr. Floating Rogue and Popper, swim baits, even tried a weighless fluke. No bites in spite of multiple fish coming up at a time. How can I catch these fish???

Agreed!

If you can get it in there while they are chasing they will eat almost anything. On Washington I have interrupted chases with spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater.
Now see Eric that was funny and it wasn't mean. You and your special friend (psychiatrist) are making some real progress

I havn't fished Samamish, but it's been my experience that when the fish are feeding top water, anything that makes alot of commotion will get a strike. I do well with buzzbaits, I use the double bladed kind that really kick up the water. I think top water action is the most fun of all, seeing the fish hammer your lure is awsome. I did Banks last weekend, and the hour preceeding dark is insane top water action. The biggest fish we caught were during that time, hammering buzzbaits. If I could do that every evening, I would always have a smile on my face.
no doubt John, it doesnt get any better than topwater.

Sammamish is funny that way, for the most part the fish are usually racing out of water in the teens usually seems like aroung 15'. I think they sit down near the bottom, top of the weeds or suspend under/ next to a dock, and go back there right after they get a mouthful. I have usually caught them on a 3/4 oz. spinnerbait ripped through the top of the weeds, the fish don't have to commit so hard to get it they only have to move a couple feet instead of coming all the way to the top. Another great bait is a senko in color 031 weightless, let it fall right in the middle were the fish were blowing up, make sure to let it go all the way to the bottom. I catch alot suspended at about a 20 count, yes very boring but very effective.
The thing is though when some fish are doing this on the surface there is twice as many eating just under it.
