I would like to know if any of you that are running an Evenrude E-tec had any powerhead problems. If so what was the damage, such as what did the pistons look like the piston walls and so forth. I'm conducting lubracation resurch and your inputs would be helpful. I have an 06 E-tec and have been using Amsoil HP Injector oil at a 50:1 mixture for the past 4 years instead of the Evenrude XP 100 100;1 oil without any problems at all. I have a strong feeling that XP 100 at 100:1 mixture isn't enough lubracation therefor causing the pistons to over heat causing major powerhead damage.

I did have the computer reset for 50:1 as recommended by the west coast factory rep to prevent overheating and damage.

I am going to start using ams oil this year on my 07 e-tech and will use the hp injector oil. Can you give me a call at 206-724-6324 I have some questions for you thanks Matt
I have used Amsoil HP Injector on the last three engines I've owned. including my 06 225 HO E-tec. I also have run it at the 50 to 1 setting and have absolutely 0 issues. When I pulled the plugs at 100 hrs and looked at the piston tops with a bore scope. they looked absolutely spotless. I did the same thing recently at 190 hours and the results were the same, spotless! I need to mention that the exhaust in the prop is extremely clean as well. I do put a can of SeaFoam in the fuel about every 3-4 fill-ups.
I also use the lower unit gear oil as well as a new product that Amsoil has to counter the effects of ethanol in the gas.
It is my understanding that all the newer E-tec HO engines can only be run at 50 to 1 vs. 100 to 1 like the older models.
Jim what is the new product for ethanol. I'm a dealer and I haven't been able to find anything about ethanol fuel treatment from Amsoil. I believe that the new E-tec's went to 50:1 is because the 100:1 is not enough lubracation and causing the older ones to burn up. I don't care what anyone says you just can't beat the protection that Amsoil give you. P.S. thanks for your input.

I'm also a dealer here in Kennewick Harry. The product is relatively new on the market and called Quickshot. The literature I got on the product roll-out, cited the reduction of ethanol-fuel related problems in small engines. Its too early for me to tell what the long term effect will be, but I've only been using it since late February.
You are correct about the lubrication issues related to the 100x1 ratio Evinrude 1st came out with. I never changed from 50x1 after I broke the engine in on the factory supplied oil. I just switched to HP Injector and never looked back.
Amsoil does produce outstanding products that live up to their claims.

Wouldn't it be easier to ask if anyone that owns an e-tech hasn't had powerhead issues?
Here's another:
Why would you buy a 10-15k motor and have to baby it like a small child? This topic proves to me that I would never buy one.

Here's another question.....

You have just spent in excess of $10,000.00 for a motor. Why wouldn't you use EXACTLY what the manufacturer has suggested (i.e. Evinrude or Merc or Yamaha brand oil), so as to alleviate ANY loophole for them to deny your warranty?
Me! I can't say the same for the other brands I have run.

None here on my 2007 ETEC 225 H.O.

Marc, owe you a beer for recommending Tom's in Olympia, they are good.

I did the 300 hour service early at 180 hours.

I second Sessler, nothing against Amsoil, I would not give the outboard MFG anything to use in a warranty claim. XD-100 is all I run.

I'll gladly share a beer with you to celebrate our mechanic. Finding a good mechanic is really tough; finding a great one like Tom (Tom's Outboard, Olympia) is gold. This man understands how to find the root of the problem, rather than just fixing the stuff that breaks when a problem occurs. If you don't need something, he won't sell it to you even at the expense of his paycheck. I have been lucky not to need his talent much since the OMC days, but I have seen what he as done for friends that had problems that others couldn't solve.

ciao,
Marc

He is good at all motors, but he doesn't do much work on Mercs now; mostly Evinrude and Honda as that is what he sells and specializes in. I have a friend in Oregon that had his Merc rebuilt by two different shops and when it blew the 3rd time, he took it to Tom's and Tom went through the entire engine and found the cause. That was about 8 years ago, and my friend's Merc is running great to this day. You might give him a call and see if he will work on yours.

ciao,
Marc

Toms here in O-Town...Is he good at all motors..ie Merc..Since I live here.If I could have a local shop with a High star rating from guys on here it would be nice.I went to tanglewilde marine once"once"Just did not sit right seeing the guys drinking beers at 10 am in the morn.Even if they were only open till noon on the weekend.
I second, third, and fourth the recommendation Marc gave for Tom's outboard. I wish he was located over hear near the Tri-Cities, just for the peace of mind it would give me having an outstanding maintenance facility nearby if I needed one.
I would have to agree... Tom's Outboard is the best place to take an outboard motor. He took care of my motor fast and I even went to get the parts to save time!!! I am very happy with there service and would send anyone to them before any other shop!!! I just know that bass guys that we are we always want our rig asap so just FYI bass guys are not on there top of the list there but the service is bar-none so its worth the time!!!!
