Heavy weeds and mats

I would think that in the middle of a 95 degree day, it might be your only option to fish for inactive fish because the majority of them are going to be like that. And, there are deffenatly open pockets deep down in there.

By the way, thanks for everyones input. My cousin got a 5lb 13oz largemouth last week because of some of the tips from this thread. Its his personal best.

That's neat to hear about your cousin's new personal best Aaron! I definately agree that there are times when targeting inactive fish is the only way to go. I was just trying to get a better idea of what was going on under the heavy mats as I am kind of new to that kind of fishing.

David, I think you can find fish in all activity levels under pads and matted vegetation. If there is plenty of food under the canopy of algae, matted milfoil, pads, etc. then the fish don't necessarily have to venture to the edges of weeds or open pockets during peak activity levels. Don't over think it. Spool up some heavy braid, put on a heavy weight, rig up a juicy looking soft plastic, plop your bait it in the middle of the nastiest stuff you can find, get bit, set the hook, wrestle a pig out of the salad and repeat.

overthinking... thats a whole new post. Too many guys try to figure out all the little secrets and perfect baits. It's really as simple as find the fish, put something in front of it that it might eat, wiggle it right, and be ready. Thats the big secret.
