Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I just thought it would be cool to find out how everyone got into Bass Fishing. Was it a family member or you saw it on TV and thought it would be fun or bay accident?

I personally got started by my uncle Jason and have had loads of fun learning from him and friends.

I got started in the 50's as a kid in California fishing the delta. My dad probably caught hundreds of bass over 10 lbs. In those days you never saw anyone else targeting bass, and he was a bass fanastic.
I grew up fishing for steelhead and Trout as a young kid. When I was in the 4th grade I moved next to a pond that was full of bass. I went there almost everyday trying to figure out how to catch them. In time I became better and better and was soon hooked for life! Bass fishing will always be special to me because it was something I learned and developed a passion for all on my own without anyone else introducing me to it.
My father and I grew up salmon and trout fishing. When the salmon fishing headed south, we opted to try something new, and have been hooked on bass ever since. We grew up in Kenmore, and their was a launch not more than 5min from home on Lake Washington. Our first 3 years we probably logged more than 150days on that lake alone. We would often fish both Saturday and Sunday all year long. We would make trips up North quite a bit also to lakes such as Goodwin, Whatcom, Big, Terrell, and McMaury just to name a few. We've caught good fish from all. We even barrowed a canoe and hit Green Lake in Seattle! We were truely hooked. We've had a blast learning this together, and continue to fish together a lot, just not as much since I live in Parkland now.
Grew up in Florida and Texas and my dad fished tournaments and I was always around it. So been fishing all my life and now here I am.

I grew up southwest of Chicago, Illinois and our family used to make a trip north to the Detroit Lakes area of Minnesota during the summer. These trips started in 1974 or so when I was about 13 and only lasted for 4 or 5 years. My two older brothers, my cousin who is my age, and I would be on the water about a half hour before sunrise and flying across the lake as fast as that 5hp rental boat would take us. We caught a ton of LMB as well as some pretty good size Northern Pike. The other fisherman at the resort were all curious as to what lures we used to catch such nice stringers of bass. We used mostly "Heddon Lucky 13", "Bass-O-Reno" and other wooden top water baits. The resort posted quite a few pictures of us up on their wall. I would have to credit my brother who was in his early 20's at the time with striking my interest in bass fishing as he was the oldest of us boys.
I got out of bass fishing shortly after High School and didn't fish really at all for about 20 years. Started fishing again about 8 years ago and have been enjoying every trip out.
If any of you have friends or family members you have been wanting to take fishing but haven't gotten around to it. Don't wait! I recently lost my Dad and lost my oldest brother several years ago. Those fishing trips we had were some of the best times in my life....
These days I take my two sons fishing as often as I can and hope they enjoy our trips out as much as I do.
i would have to say by watching Bill Dance and Hank Parker outdoors shows
I got started as a young kid with my dad. We fished with our local bass club until he became ill and I lost him when I was 17. I got out of bass fishing for several years since I no longer had a boat to fish with. I bought my own boat 2 years ago and am now showing my son and daughter the joys of fishing. Hopefully someday they will have this same question presented to them and it would make me proud to hear them say that their dad taught them.
I grew up fly fishing since I was 6. Built all of my rods, tied flies, etc.. Then when I was 25, a friend of mine in Moses called me to say he had bought a Procraft Bass Boat. I had no idea what he was talking about. He told me to meet him at Banks Lake to go fish. I was familar with the area because I had fished Dry Falls for years, but had never been to Banks. The second we were screaming across Banks at 60 mph I was hooked.
My dad got us boys started. I was about 9 years old. We went to Lake Powell back in the glory days of that lake. Mid 70's to late 70's. He learned how to bass fish and started touring the west in the old Western Bass circuit. I was very fortunate to meet some of the all time great western anglers thru my dad. To this day, he and Dee Thomas are very close friends and I have been lucky enough to spent a day or two on the water with them.

I grew up trout fishing with my Grandfather, Uncle, and Dad around Snohomish County when I was young, did alot of pier fishing for piling perch and bottom fish down in Edmonds in my early teens... I had never caught a bass until I was like 24 (1997) and was out on Storm Lake with my Brother, we just went out on his old 12 foot car topper to throw nightcrawlers for trout, I put a worm on my hook and set the rod down to wipe my hands when a bass about six inches jumped clean out of the water to get that worm... I unhooked that one, straitened the worm set my rod down again without casting it, and another one jumped up and grabbed that worm! Same thing happened one more time but the third fish hit the worm while it was just beside the boat and was about 1.5lb, I just could not believe how aggressive they were and how hard that little fish pulled on my cheesy trout gear. We spent the rest of that day catching bass and having a great time. That very same night I went out and purchased some original floating rapalas and small rebel crankbaits and have not stopped buying up bass tackle yet. I got a small bass boat and joined the Washington Bass Association in 1999 and have been enjoying the competition and fellowship of tournament fishing ever since.
Not a single person in my family likes to fish...I saw Bassmasters on t.v. when I was around 11 years old. My Dad saw a thing in the newspaper about Capital City Bass Club and knew I was interested in it. He took me to my first meeting when I was 13 or 14 (essentially dropped me off at the front door!)and I met one of my best friends Matt Grinestine (aka FATS!). He got me my first bass on a plum 4" ring worm on Long Lake (Thurston County). I'm now 34 years old and have been hooked every since!!!!!
once upon a time, in a land they called canuckia.

...i started out fishing when i was really young. just like most, i fished with my grandfather and my father. worm and bobber was pretty much all she wrote. up until now, it was really just a hobby that would come and go only a couple times a year.

i got reintroduced into bass fishing a couple years ago after a short visit home with my cousin and his friends. from there it really snowballed. shortly after i got the itch. from there i joined wba. i got a whooping the 1st year. the itch became a rash, and the rest is really history.

nothing really interests me now, but big fish, and big baits. i cant really get myself into throwing anything else.

i blame but two people for my addiction: dean for hooking a monster we never saw for our 1st swimbait bite [we will be back]. jordache for always feeding the addiction.

honorary mentions be: dd - for always sending us pictures of big greens [browns be illegal!]. butta - for constantly being on top of what we should be getting and throwing.

... and that was how the story began.

cant wait until we write the next chapter - stay tuned!
