First of all...prayers to the people of Japan.

But....I have been thinking that it is kinda strange that there has been no looting going on in Japan.

If that was in the US the looters would be all over things like white on rice.

Why is this?

Let's do this Steve; you let me know when you see the first one. I will trust you are telling me the truth when you see one. You can assume I am naive but I am as cynical as anyone you probably know. It is part of my job description.

I don't think most people realize how different the Japanese culture is than the rest of the world. I could end up being wrong about this one but they operate from a different standard than we do. For example: there is not a single CEO in this country that has accapted any blame for their part in the financial crisis we have been in over the past 3 years. There are plenty of them defending themselves in court but not a single one of them has come out and said, "I am guilty and I'm sorry, I''l take my lumps. Japanies CEO's (many of them) have commited suicide for their roles in financial corruption. We will see how this shakes out.

I am not Asian but I am pretty good at origami. In fact I am good enough at origami that I could fold you up and stuff you in a rod locker.

Apparently you haven't done your homework. Nanking comes to mind not to mention the treatment of POW's in Japan's care. Their culture is based on violence and brutality and total subordination to the Emperor. But hey, the American internment camps must have been no picnic either.

I lived in Japan for nearly three years while stationed in the Navy.  Looting, destroying other peoples' property, it's just not in their culture.

Troy,

I was unaware Japan still had an Emperor. I think comparing the treatment of your enemies to your own people is a stretch....not to mention that was over 50 years ago.

Sorry I haven't been on in a few days but here's one for ya.

Keep your crank bait. It will remind you that desperate times will generate desperate measures, even with the best of folks. Remember that soccer team that crash landed in the Andes Mountains, resorting to cannibalism... I doubt any of them ever thought they were capable of  doing such a thing. There is story after story, of extraordinary acts of survival throughout history.

On balance the Japanese have demonstrated a proud history of resiliency  that will carry them through this too.

I went to college with a guy from Japan that was involved in motor cycle gangs over there.  From the stories he told, not everything in Japan is prim and proper, just like every where else.  I would imagine that there has been less issue in Japan because a major city was not hit - rural areas with rural people that take care of themselves and each other.  If this had hit Tokoyo directly, I bet it would be a different story, but probably not to the scale of Haiti and New Orleans.
