Washington Fishing

The weights were down from last year. Four teams had over 20lbs the first day compared to last year when there were eleven 20lb+ bags. The fishing was even tougher today with several teams struggling to catch a limit. Aaron Echternkamp and Dave Kromm won with over 19lbs today. Ron Hobbs Jr. and his partner took 6th (I think). Great job again Ron. IMHO you are the most consistent versatile angler I know. It is a shame just a little bit of your talent can't rub off on me.

It was a fun tournament, but disappointing in that we just missed the top ten two years in a row. I have only fished this lake the two full tournament days (last year and this year) and a half practice day. Each time I have caught a lot of nice smallies, and each year I figured I would make it to the top ten with smallies. Next year I won't count on that again. You can do it, but it would be a lot easier if you at least had one bass in your bag over 5 pounds, and that means a largemouth by the first week of May. We really thought we would get 20 pounds of smallmouths, but this year everyone discovered our spot and there were no less than 8 boats sharing the fish at all times. Just shows that you have to keep adapting and learning new places and techniques to stay competitive. Next year I vote this has to be a smallmouth only tourney!

I can't imagine what the teams feel like that caught huge largemouth and didn't even weigh near enough to make the cut.

Next year I hope to get some time to prefish and learn about the green bass on the lake. It sucks to work long hours, especially when you guys are posting pictures of your prefish success.

ciao,
Marc
All I can say is ouch Sunday hurt for me. My partner put on a "real Moses Lake Clinic" for about a 1/2 hour on Saturday. Sunday He fished well as well. Now speaking of myself I was very off my game this weekend, I don't know what was wrong but I was caught with my rod in the wrong postition not feeling bites, and so on. These stupid mistakes equalled lost fish and missed bites, if you want to win you can't make mistakes, especially against the others in the top ten. The biggest mistake we made was thinking that it was going to only take 19.5 to win, in hindsight which is always 20/20 we would have done the same as the day before. We had 19.10 on day ones with a big fish at barely over 4, it seemed everyone else had that big kicker.
Ron, congratulations to you and Mike on another solid tournament finish. To make the Top 10 in that strong field is a feat in itself. Nice work!
It is a little brutal that your worst day is better than most guy's best day.
