Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I fished Silver Lake this weekend and something happened that shows how selective or picky a bass can be. I was fishing in a canal first thing in the morning and there was a small stick the was sticking up out of the water that was off shore about 15 feet. It was something that stood out from everything else so of course I flipped to it with my jig. I hit it twice and then my backseater(brian walters) hit it a few times with a jig also. No bites. We came back through about a half hour later and I again hit it with my jig and Brian threw a spinnerbait and ran it across the stick. No bites again. Just ahead was Tony and Jordan headed our way. Tony flipped to it a couple of times with a jig. No bites. Jordan followed Tony's jig up with a tube and ''THUMP"! He gets bit. It was a huge Largemouth.
That fish had been casted at somewhere around 8 times in a very short amount of time. All It took was a different bait that it had not seen a bunch of times for it to bite. I just thought it was crazy because we hit it hard with the jigs and nada!
We must have flipped ten thousand times a piece throughout the day and no fish. It makes you wonder how many fish your jig dropped in front of and they just looked at it and turned away.

Your telling me.... we were actually wondering how many cast we made. So I figured it out in a kinda not so official way. I figured we did about 3 cast a min which ends up being about 1400 per person, so that would be 2800 just for us. Now take that by 25 boats and you have right around 36,000 cast for a grand total of 3 fish (I beleive) so that comes out to about 1 fish for every 12,000 cast or a 0.000083 percent chance of catching a fish on a cast. Now that is CRAZY!!!

Not responsiable if my math is off a little since it has been a long day. But there ya go guys.

I was also throwing a 3/8oz. jig with a big trailer for the slower fall. I also pitched a small creature bait with a tiny tungsten weight for a slow fall. It is crazy to make that many pitches with zero results!
This really is a great subject. That day that Eric kicked our butts was simply incredulous. Ron and I had fished that spot hard with terrible results despite having this be a confidence spot for us. With time running out, we decided not to die on the spot, and after moving out wouldn't you know it that Eric moved in and cleaned our clocks on the very spot, also dropshotting one of my sponsor's baits! I wish I could have watched the whole thing unfold because that was truly a last minute charge from behind to crush the competition. Nice job, Eric!

Bass fishing is full of mysteries, and I only wish I could solve them all.

I have been on both sides of this. I have fished right behind quality anglers in tourneys and caught fish many times. Once we fished a spot behind Ron and Marc (15 minutes later maybe) and caught about 22lbs in 40 minutes with the biggest going 5.5. Easily the highlight of my tournament career. I think that the fish just got turned on once we got one to go. The next year I was fishing by Marc and he cast to the same spot I had just fished and caught a 3lber not once but like 5 times. I couldn't catch a fish. To add insult to injury we weighed almost 23lbs six days earlier out of the same area. Easily one of the most frustrating experiences of my career. I think in that case he was doing something different than me that obviously was working better. I think it can help to show them something different and fish it either faster or slower than the last guy but don't get outside of what you are confident in doing. I can't stress that enough- be confident. If you aren't completely calm and confident you are done. Now that 6 years have gone by I can admit it, Marc destroyed my confidence that day and I couldn't execute.
Remember no two guys fish alike so do your thing the way you do it and know those fish have never seen it done that way before (except by you of course). :-)

Great post - I always struggle with picking apart a spot vs giving it a look and letting it rest/come back later. This provides further insight.
