Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Im interested in hearing this debate. Ive tried both. Im torn on the topic. I flip, crank, and spinnerbait straight fluro or mono. Topwater is braid. i will finesse fish braid to fluro for sensitivity but the knots (albright and uni to uni) are a pain to me in more ways than one. It seems some are "all in" on braid to fluro. How is this? What types of knots and how long of leader? Are there no drawbacks, or is that you are simply willing to overlook them for the sensitivity?

I like the looks of the J Knot. It appears to be an easier knot to tie than many, and it seems it would not be negatively affected by a difference in line diameter between main and leader like other knots are.

I have been experimenting over the last year with different combinations, and it's far from an exact science...

Great info from everyone though! It all helps.

Here's a link.

Work On Your "J Knot", Works Much Better. Google It.

The only disadvantage to using braid/nanofil is that it sits on top of the water a little longer that fluoro, beyond that its all about personal preference. If you use fluoro mainline you spend extra time removing twist from line, if you use braid you spend extra time to tie the leader. I prefer the ladder personally.

Since switching to the Nanofil knot (which I think is double allbright). I almost never ever break at the knot when pulling snags, and this knot is much lower in profile than the clinch so it does not effect casting.

The only time I don't use braid mainline is when finesse carolina rigging. The leader cannot always handle the shock of this hookset. Stick with straight mono or FC for that.

Hello Nathan,

Try using TUF-Line HeviCore if you want the advantages of braid without the floating properties.  HeviCore is a sinking braid with a fluorocarbon core that handles phenomenally.

I wrote my first product review on Tackle Warehouse I liked it so much.

People say to not use a swivel on a dropshot because it affects the action. However, it will eliminate line twist. (if it's a ball bearing swivel) Which allows you to fish all day without problems. If you fish a d-shot like me; you leave the weight on the bottom, and have the line bowed so you will constantly be able to feel the bottom, and the lure. Tie your braid to as small as a ball bearing swivel as possible. (that works for me.) You can use whatever knots u are familiar with. I know Some of the bigger names said to to tie braid to flouro but Marc just said he had a way around line twist, I bet that's what he does. It's what I do. It works Great.

don't get me wrong though. there is alot of situations where u Don't want a swivel. I use a surgeon's knot when I tie braid to mono or FC but the diameters have to be similar for it to work best.
