Just how important is a fluoro leader in clear water when using braid?

I run 80lb leaders for my musky fishin', then a 65lb power pro mailine.

They do use floro leaders, 200lb test floro leaders to be exact.  The issue is its so damn stiff it kills all the action in the lure.  So then you weigh the odds.  Do you fish a lifeless bait with invisible line or an action filled bait with visible line?  Tell ya what, the Tigers at Curlew sure dont seem to mind my Titanium leader ;-)

Hey Logan,

Try using an 8 to 10 wrap blood knot and then trim the fluorocarbon tag-end very close to the knot.  If the knot is cinched down extremely tight, there is no need to leave a tag-end sticking out at all.  I promise this knot will not fail if tied properly and will come through the reel and guides just fine.  Good luck!

I've tried using 65 lb braid with a 25 lb Seaguar leader and have trouble with the knot size and occasional backlashes. It just cast so much better without the leader. I still haven't caught a fish either way though.

I wish I could tie that knot. I just can't do it by myself. Is there some trick? I can tie the double uni but the knot tends to catch while coming out of the reel even with the tag ends trimmed close. I haven't given up on this but I just spent $31 for some 25 lb Seaguar fluoro. The spool full of 65 lb braid that I have on now wasn't cheap either.

Now that I think about it, that 25 yards of Seaguar leader line wasn't cheap either. HODDAMN, I miss my Zebco 33 and the days of dad paying for everything.

Hi Logan,

Let me know which step/aspect of the knot is giving you trouble and I will try my best to help.

Another good knot for joining two different type of lines together that I use when tying tyger wire to mono for fly fishing for tigers is an albright knot. Very small compact knot that will even go through micro guides.

Thanks Tag,

I think a lot of it deals with me losing a lot of manual dexterity. Fluoro tends to be stiff and I have trouble getting it cinched properly. With the blood knot it seems like you need to pull in four different directions and I only have two hands.
