As in a few hours I will be heading on my boat to Kapowsin. Im planning on drop shotting for largies with real big worms, and weights. Well I shouldn't say big but, im using 3/8 oz. and usually I use 1/16. or 1/8. Im going to trying to go near grass, in trees, and pads. But. I have never done this technique, just drop shot for smallies. Have you guys ever tried this? I would like to go a little bigger, but i don't have time to goto the store and get bigger drop shots. My baits are going to range from 8-10 inches. and hooks 3/0 to 6/0. What should i try to do to go bigger?

Thanks, spencer

Add splitshot weights if you just need more weight. I'm not sure why you think you need more weight though? Unless you think the wind is gonna start blowing 40mph? I have started using splitshot weights for a lot of dropshotting applications, and they work well. Unless you are in heavy grass and need a pencil style, or fishing deep rocks in which case quick drops are great.
I feel that i need more, Just in case i want to start punching the thick grass on the east side

To add, get the split shot weights that are just round and don't have the lever to pinch them open. They get hing up less and don't grab as much weed and gunk.
Ok, thanks. I was also going to get some of my river pencil lead and try to make a few things that way.

You have hole punch pliers for that pencil lead? Get creative and you should be able to make a pencil style weight that will punch well. Just tie a couple of overhand knots so it pulls out if you get hung too deep.
No I don't, but i do have surgical tubing. The lead should pull out of that if it get's hung up

Spencer, when I drop shot for large mouth I use 1/4 - 3/8th oz pencil weight and a 4/0- 5/0 EWG hook. A 7ft baitcasting rod and 12# fluoro line. 7 inch flukes or senkos work great. The reason for the added weight is because your whole set up is much bulkier then a snub on a spinning rod.
Iunderstand this, just i need more weight to punch. Usually depending where I fish. 1/16 to 1/8 and maybe 3/16 if it's blowing.

if youre using a baitcaster chances are you will need more than a 1/16oz weight to pitch your bait around regardless of the cover.
Unless your really good at pitching, a heavy weight is just gonna spook largemouth that are skidish anyways. Especially on a clear day like today. I am with daniel, use the lightest weight possible.
When I fish for Smallies, I use a spinning real, Today I used 3/8, and some river pencil lead, and wasn't pleased

What didn't you like about the 3/8? too heavy/light? Didn't get through the junk? Or was it not a match for your rod/reel combo?
