Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I thought about this recently while I was in between bites on Lake Washington on a cold January day recently. Why do I come out here and sit for hours for so few bites and fewer yet rewards of a fish in the boat. Why indeed.
I thought back to my days as a kid. I was very fortunate to have a father who was a tournement bass angler. Even more fortunate to rub elbows with some of the west best bass anglers at a very young age. I got alot of satisfaction of out fishing my older and more experienced angler when I was younger. I loved the competition of beating other guys. Men who were 20 to 40yrs my senior and have fished most of their lives.
After a long period of not fishing, ( 20 years) I finally got a boat and began the pursuit of fishing in Washington. What a world of difference fishing here is. I was humbled many a day out on our local lakes. After a few years of club fishing the competitive fire began to grow again. But this time it was different. It was no longer about fishing against others, it was fishing against the fish themselves.
Not that fishing is easy in other parts of the country, I have had many a tough day on the Delta, Lake Powell, Lake Mead and Clear Lake, it just seems to me that fishing in Washington is extra tough. Or, I'm just extra bad and have to work a whole lot harder to get the few bites I do get. I like to think that is just a little tougher up here in Washington.
With that being said, that is why I now fish, it's against these extra wiley, tough, and downright finncky fish that have taken up residence here. They seem to have captured my attention more than the "beating the other guys in the tournements".

The beating of these fish is why I fish.

Good thread Mark , Well i have been fishing every since i got hold of a "cane pole" . I grew up in Michigan but during the summer months my parents sent me down south "mississippi" to spend the summer with my grandparents . Well Granddad was a self employed carpenter and no kidding man he would go to the local farm pond not far from the house every single day after work 5 till dark and we would load the boat with Bluegill (Bream) , Crappie (whiteperch) and Bass (bigmouth) . Now saturdays were special because thats when we could take the boat out to the big lake "Ross Barrnett " And we would spend the entire day on the lake . I was the kinda of kid that would awake myself before anyone around 4am and turn on the tube and watch "orlando wilson" & "Bill dance " (dreaming i was those guys) .. After that i would be filled with fire and run outside and start getting the poles toghether and load the boat up . By the time grandpa would awake 5:30 am i would be sitting outside on the steps awaiting to go . I can remember him staring at me and shaking his head , saying things like "i cant believe you love fishing this much" .Well that feeling and excitement is something that i still have to this dayat age 33 . I have always told myself once that feeling goes away is the day i will leave the sport behind . I honestly just truly enjoy connecting to mother nature and setting the hook every chance i get . I feel as though that fishing is a part of who i am as a person , it doesnt matter if im in a tourney in someones back seat , on the bank , in a pontoon etc . If i can make a cast on the water "life is good" for me .

As for Bassing in washington state , i must admit that when i first arrived here three years ago from nashville,TN i was very sadden to encounter so many anglers that did nothing but trout & salmon fish . Before i even drove out here i reserched bass fishing in this state on the internet and the only thing that came up was a few bass clubs over in eastern washington . Well that wasn't enough for me to try and pull my boat out here at the time . Needless to say i ended up selling it to one of my bass buddies in TN for a really low price . About 2 years ago i ran across a great website on line that showed me all the little hidden lakes around my area and the site also gave great lake info that showed me that bass fishing here is "ALIVE" and really good . From that point i accuired a pontoon boat and began my bass mission. I would fish every saturday and sunday on a different lake from way up north pass everett down to a few lakes near tacoma . I manage to cover over 12 different lakes in one summer , Out of all those lakes i manage to produced 4 LMB that went 5lbs or better and many fours . Only down side to bassing on these little lakes was the fact that once you landed a "hawg" there wasnt much left to look forward too "stunted bass" ...After that summer i ran into a few guys that got me involved into a really great bass club . I can remember driving back to the house after my first club meeting full of joy because i knew that i was back in the loop again and the bass scene out here is awsome .

Like Mark and Daniel Mentioned bassing here in washington is different than anything else that i have fish before .In nashville , TN i lived 10min away from Persy Priest lake " and 10min away of "old hickory lake" . Not to say that bassing was easy down there but no where that amout of skill set that it takes out here to get bit . I came here with 70% of my tackle being hard baits and 30% plastic . Funny thing now is that im 70% plastic and 30% hard baits ..lol I will say that fishing out here has increased my skillset on the water and i have learned alot from local angler . I have a long way to go on these waters before i would consider myself the kind of tourney angler thats viewed as a top producer . But sites like this and the small bass fishing community mixed with some awsome guys is what keeps my fire alive .

So at the end of each day off the the lake i dont even ask myself why i love to bass fishing , for me i say things like next time i get out i going to try something new and fish in different parts of lake or scout out things that are not visable to the human eye ..
I dont even question my dedication to the sport because every since my 8th birthday and grandpa and i left the local tackle store with my brand new zebco28 my life has never been the same since.

Hey Mark, wanted to add my 2 pennies to the toughness here in WA. I grew up in central CA, fishing Eastman, Hensley, McClure, yadda yadda. Ive also fished in Illinois, Missisippi, and Maine(Maine is way underated). The fishing here is wayyyy different it seems. The lack of pressure here is nuts, even Maine has more pressure than here! I think the diff with WA to CA is the diff layout of the lakes. It seems almost everything here is a bowl with very subtle contours, if any. Most CA lakes I have fished have point after point, after rock pile, brush pile, etc etc. Thats what screws me up, the lack of structure, or obvious structure anyways. Ive also never fished a single dock until I got here. Thats me wierd views.

Good post man
