If you are taking advice Ron, trade in your GLX for Ugly sticks, I think everyone will appreciate it!

Fully agree here.  A 7' Medium action rod with a 2500 sized reel and 8lb mono caught me many a fish when starting out.  If it were me, I'd be getting a Shimano Compre, Abu Veritas, or Fenwick HMX rod and a Pflueger President or Shimano Sahara reel.  8lb P-line fluoroclear.

As for lures, you'll want to stay within your rods capabilities.  Grab some 1/16 and 1/8oz bullet weights, some 1/0 and 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hooks, some 5" Senkos in Green Pumpkin, Zoom Lizards, 4" curlytail grubs, and YUM Craw Papi's or RI Sweet Beavers.  A few Rapala DT 4 or 6 cranks, a Rat-L-Trap or two, some 3/8oz spinnerbaits, and a few Zara Puppy Spooks should round you out.  I've caught a ton of fish on my old 7' spinning combo and a 5" Senko.

I would buy a 7 ft medium, fast action spinning rod. From shore you are limited and when I fish from shore with my kids we are usually using weightless plastics, light Texas rigs, and small topwaters. A spinning rod makes more sense because they cast lighter lures further more accurate and less backlashes. Typically I would match with a 2500 size reel with 8 pound mono line.
For spinning reels I think shimano has every advantage in the price point you are looking for.

For rods it's kind of a toss up that price point all the rods seem really close and honestly most of the blanks are probably coming from the same factories overseas. But I know I really think BPS Extreme series are awesome and can be had for around $80 on sale.
