The short version is that it is a lot like the minor leagues in MLB, except that the elite series guys fish these events all the time, it is a route to the Bassmasters Classic, but more importantly it is the route to the elite’s series. Most all elites Series anglers came from the Opens or a similar format tournament series, depending on how long they have been a pro.
Elite series anglers have a bad year in the elites can recoup their season and qualify for the elites via the opens for the following season. This link is to BASS/ESPN and it covers in detail who qualifies for the Classic and Elites Series.

Very cool! How do those Opens work? Do any of the big name guys fish them?
