Washington Fishing

I got a question for some of you law biting folks and bass picture guys.

Can you legally keep more than 1 17" largemouth and 1 smallmouth over 14" (some lakes may differ) in your livewell, on your boat, if you are not in a tournament, for a good picture at the end of the day?

The reason I ask is because I got hammered by some guys on another website for showing a picture of 5 smallmouth over 17" and I was not in a tournament even though I was releasing them. I don't think you can legally keep the fish in the boat for a good pic but ??? (I know a lot of guys, myself included, that like a good pic at the end of a day with all the glory fish...)

There are some enforcement officers that I personally know that would have written me up regardless if I was keeping them or letting them all go at the end of the day.

So the question is, do you keep um for a pic and risk a huge ticket or release um? (:

Nick,

I take the pictures then release right after I catch them but I dont have a live well. How did Keith and Bill end up at the Potholes? and how did you do today?
By law you can retain fish untill you have reach your limit so I beleive you can not have more then 1 over 17. Check in the regs it will say in state wide rules. Thanks again for your info

Wolskey and I chatted about this the other day. I did not decide to write a post on it because.... look at all the pictures that break the law I know I have some not realizing it. Tag should be in jail... just joking. Anyways back on track during a contest with contest banner on makes you legal to retain these same fish, hence we have contest banners. That is the reason we have to have those ugly green things around our cowlings.

So inconclusion, the way I see it if you are fishing a tourney it is legal to hold up to 5 fish over the slot. If not you have to go by the game laws meaning only retaining one fish over the slot. Don't worry I won't turn anyone of you law breakers in!

Nick catch and release the faster you return the fish the better off and healthier they will be. I don't usually take pictures of my fish unless they are "Tag" BIG!
Good topic, Nick. I agree with Ron's post. Although I release all my fish and keep the livewells on constant re-circulate and fill, I don't want to break any laws. I know I get frustrated when I see people harvest fish inside the slot or multiple over slot fish, so I don't want to be hypocritical by breaking any rules myself. In the future, if I catch a picture worthy fish, I will snap it and let it go. I don't want to go to the pen. I've heard what they do in there to guys that possess more than one fish over 17". Not pretty....
I'm sure Tag and Jr. took those photo's a few years ago before the possession limit changed, or they were in California, or Mexico maybe? Or maybe they had someone else in the boat with them? Tough to know what the circumstances are from a photo, I'm sure there is an innocent explanation...

ciao,
Marc

I have seen this Topic come up in the past . My thing is that i like to "double fist" in pics . so with that being said if i get one over 17" it's going in the live well and properly handled. Once i get another fish over 17" i will take a pic of both fish toghether and imeddiately release both fish . Now on the side of keeping 5 17"+ bass while not in a tourney , just for the sake of one pic with all five bass and your not in a tourney . Well your just setting yourself up to get busted if approached by the boyz in brown !

My personal thoughts on this topic is just stick to the double fist and your only illegal for a matter of 2 minutes tops (snap, pic) . But if your driving around the lake with a loaded live well you cant be mad about the ticket that may come your way for not being in a tourney ..

Im not the type of "person" that would give a guy a hard time about having a pic with five fish over 17" . But there are alot of jealous anglers that will give you a hard time about it (what r ya gonna do) . Either dont post the pic and if you do, expect to listen to the chearleaders shake there pom-poms !! LOL

While it may be technically illegal to retain two over 17" for pictures it certainly doesn't violate the "spirit of the law" which is to prevent overharvest of these size fish. That's why they make tournament exceptions. I personally am not worried about it and would take my chances if I ever caught more than two in a day. Never has happened so it is sort of a moot point for me. If you are worried about it just take a picture of your biggest two and keep culling up.
It probably would have been better if the topic had never been brought up so we could have been blissfully ignorant. Nice job Berto.
My theory is that typically there are two of us in the boat, thus two fish over 17" is A-OK. I only have two hands anyways right, and I have a hard time doing the super cool hold two fish with one hand thingy like Tag, but it looks so damn cool.
You must have one hell of a livewell Jon!? LOL

I'm with Eric on this one, if I caught fish like Tag, I'd have 30 of them in the livewell, laws be damned.
i really dont see a problem with it. i agree with eric the law is there to protect against harvest. Although i did flip someone on this site some crap for posting a video of him kicking a wild steely on the beach and holding it out of the water. so i guess im a hipocrite.

I don't think you are a hypocrite Troy. Kicking a wild Steelhead onto a beach could seriously reduce the chance of that fish surviving.
Bass on the other hand are quite tough. I hope people would use good judgement before hauling fish around in their livewell though. I never keep fish in my box in the winter or early spring when they are coming out of 30+ feet of water. They would have to be fizzed to get back down so I just think it is goofy to keep them up any longer than necassary. I also wouldn't haul fish around in really hot weather, say summertime in eastern Wa. They have a risk of dying in the box or from delayed mortality.
