Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

My family and I along with a bunch of our friends are doing a weekend at Riffe this month, and I want to get my friends, who dont fish much, into some smallies. I've never fished Riffe for bass, only a couple of times for salmon. But from what I hear, there's some good smallie fishin' there. Any tips on the best part of the lake for bass? I was looking at the sattelite map, and I would think that the upper end of the lake where the cowlitz comes in would be the best. It looks like there's some nice points up there, combined with the river coming in, would seem like prime smallie area. Is this assumption correct? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Riffe is a great lake I know there are a lot of people that would disagree. Below should help you get started.

Baits- Jerk baits, Rattle traps, spinner bait, Foot ball heads, Swim baits, Drop shot, all work well.

Areas- fish the flats on the left side coming from the campground and the flat on the right side.

This time of the year the fish will be on the flats in about 2 to 8 feet of water morning bite is always the best. Once the wind starts blowning and trust me it will. If you can stay on the water and fish any windy points or wind blown shore line should produce.

Wind is a key factor on Riffe it can be a pain to fish in but your best fish will normally come when the wind is blowing.

Thanks for the info, it's much appreciated. Is it likely that the spawn would be later on Riffe because it warms later than alot of other lakes? I know that on all the other lakes I've fished lately, the spawn seems to be pretty much over. Is it possible that there would still be fish on beds there? I actually dont prefer bed fishing, it's kinda like taking candy from a baby, but it might be an easy way to get some of my non angler friends hooked up. I just want to see everyone have a good time and get a taste of that rush from nailing some smallies.

I know what you mean. I dont think I could say I actually hate any lakes, but I do have those that I just have no interest in putting any time into. Not sure what the dynamic is that causes that with some lakes and not others, but there are more than one lake that I have fished once, and never returned to. Harts lake is one of those. Actually I fished Harts twice because my wife just had to try it out even though I told her it was a bad idea. She felt the same way afterwards...

John Mark - I HATE this lake, it is not a dislike, it is a vehement hatred. Now my fishing partner likes it as much as I hate it. It seems like it is either red hot, or colder than a welldiggers....you know where I'm headed. I seem to hit it on the cold days. The area you are referring to is correct, there is a huge flat, that everyone BUT me catches them on. Hobbs also does quite well, and I'm sure between he and Reimers, they can steer you in the right direction.

There an actual fishing post.

Doesn't mean it will continue.

hey whats up i fished an open there last weekend my cousin and i finished 10 th not great but the diffenence between 10th and 3 rd was less then 2 lbs there was alot of limits brought in and 16 plus won it. I love this lake i don't always catch size but the numbers are always there. Weighed in just short of 10 lbs with 5 fish our biggest was 2.8 caught it on the flat across from cosmos boat ramp had a limit there in 45 min. caught about 15 fish all day and called 3 times jigs in about 10-15 feet use the wind to drag and if it really picks up hit points. Fish cosmos hard with a jig and drop shot and you should pick up some fish. Crankbaits in craw colors work great two. Don't forget to loosen the drag the smallies in this lake fight like its there last meal. water was 64-67 and really high. watch for debri and good luck let me know how you do. Fish on rick.
sparky theres alot of area to cover there the flats and kosmos area are huge plus there's some other good spots i fish but i didn't pick any up there yet if youve never been you gotta hit it but wind can really dictate where you fish because 4 ft white caps are pretty regular even on nice days. you going anytime soon.

I heard that the fish hadn't even spawned yet, as of the 1st of June. I have done really well there this time of year with traps and spinnerbaits on the Kosmos flat. The road bed coming right up the middle of the flat from the backend can be a great spot when the fish are spawning. Its is a easy place to find line up the tall trees and follow that line.
For the most part I love fishing this lake after the spawn. I really like it because of the deep water structure fishing that it offers. The ledges on this lake are amazing full of all kinds of debris. Good luck this weekend. There are also largies on this lake look to the back of the flats and creek channels.
My buddy Evan Kauffman got a monster largemouth here last year...close to 9 lbs....Josh Tucker my NWB partner got a 7.5lb smallie here; it spit up a perch close to 12 inches. There are some big fish, though not common.
