Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

So I'm a little confused, or atleast my friend I was talking made me a little confused. I've heard alot about wdfd killing off lakes with bass. Do they do this so that when they restock it the trout have no predators/anything to compete with them for food or to kill off other invasive species? I thought it was that they just don't want anything disturbing the trout population.

There are many reasons for planned lake adjustments, some have to do with invasive species both plant and animal and some have to do with the purpose of the lake or body of water. Sometimes unauthorized fish find their way into controlled waters. The state managers are required to make the necessary adjustments. WDFW has a schedule of lakes to be rehabilitated and many times look forward to having anglers remove fish for restocking in other waters, call the WDFW biologist in the concerned area for more information.

Mark's answer is excellent.

As a general rule, most of the time this occurs on lakes managed as a trout fishery.  It is less expensive and more successful to plant smaller trout, and let them grow and get adjusted to the lake prior to the opening of trout season.  The problem with planting smaller trout is that they are easier targets for bass and birds.  Raising trout to catchable size reduces predation, but is very expensive and produces less fish.
