Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

This topic has been on my mind for a while now. I've talked with a bunch of guys about it and some officials. Hypothetically speaking, let's say your out fishing here in Washington and you or your bud catch the new state record Largemouth/smallmouth bass... Now what??? From what I've gathered your only solid option to seal this deal is to kill the fish and have it weighed on a certified scale and get a guy/ gal from the Dept of fish and Wildlife on the scene to take over.

Am I missing anything here? Can you legally transport the fish in a livewell to help attempt to keep it alive with out compromising said pending state record bass?? A bigger question in the back of my mind (coming from Texas) is what could be done to improve the process?? let's face it... were mostly preservationists here and not many of us would want to kill a fish that lived long enough to break 11 lb 9oz. Also most of us know there are bigger fish swimming in this state (cough, cough) Tag and likely a few others who have broke the mark... any extra insight guys??

Why not request a rule change with WDFW? They change the rules yearly....

Tag, I just PM'd you all the info on his card except the building address of the headquarters

Dan, I have his number in my phone. Jon, that's what I'm thinking. Is anyone willing to put any energy into it?? I think it would take strength in numbers. Tag, for the fun of it, will you attach a photo of that fish?? I love seeing that picture;)

Also Dan, I'd put Ike to shame with screaming and excitement if that ever happened record or not, LOL!

Go

John G.!!!

Forget about the haters!!!

Yeah but if the fish didn't have to be killed to get the record I know you wouldn't kill it. Because you wouldn't have to.

The odds of some slimer guy catching a fish like that are unlikey. unless in the case it ate one of the 12"ers the slimer guy was reeling in; which I have heard of happenning.

I would say yes a rule change is needed. What is the harm of transporting a live fish only in the instance of certification. As for me I am not as noble. I would kill it sorry guys but the worst thing I could imagine is letting a fish like that go not getting my name in the book only to see some slimmer fisherman catch her later & get his name in the book. This is a quest & I think it would only be right to have a Bass fisherman's name linked with it.

You're a good man, Mr. Steiner.  However, I would insist on paying you a bonus for each humorous contempt of court.

Tag,

I would have to consider waiving my fee in this case.

If I ended up receiving a fine for transporting a live gamefish without a permit, I'd either just pay the fine or challenge it in court and have Dana represent me.

Not to discourage anyone from trying again, but just so you know what you are up against I spent 12 years on the Inland Fish Policy Advisory Group, which is the body of non-WDFW personnel who are supposed to recommend rule changes.

I personally tried to change this rule and submitted the change repeatedly.  Each year I received a different excuse as to why this change was not feasible, so I came up with solutions each year for the excuse, and resubmitted the next year, with the same results.

I also tried to start a "Share A Lunker" Program for smallmouth bass in Washington.

It became very clear that there was no interest in the WDFW in doing anything to promote bass fishing, in any shape or form.

Now times are different, and the leadership is different, so maybe it is time to try again...but you will excuse me if this time I let someone else lead this charge.  You will have my support and encouragement.

I didn't vote for Obama either!!!
