Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I have a hellin and rollins Musky catalog and am looking to spend some money, I would like to know the best types of baits to use for tigers. How big can I get away with? Are there any topwaters that bring the fish to the surface? I already have some cowgirl spinners and musky killers, I am more interested in some hard baits, suggestions would be awesome.

Heyah Ron,
Try www.ducktaillures.com They now make some spinner/inline baits just for us out here. They are a little smaller than Musky Killers, which I personally am very happy with those. The Ducktails are more affordable. Lighter and easier to throw around. High quality baits. Don't waste your money on the BIG baits, really. 6-8 inches are good. Rapalas, grandmas and if you like glider baits try www.bikinibaits.com. Based out of Oregon. A little bit expensive but are excellent baits. Cowgirl (Muskey Mayhem) now makes some "baby girl"spinners that are nice too. Hope this helps a little bit, Todd

Ron,

As I'm sure you know there are hundreds of different lures out there with just as many people telling what the best are.

I personally throw mainly bucktails like Mepps Musky killers and more recently the Beast Teaser Stringer series, far more Muskies are caught on bucktail than any other lure. As Todd pointed out you should stay a little on the smaller side than what people use for pure strain Muskies back east. Also don't forget to use a good quality leader. Most anglers I know out here use Charlie’s Leaders; he makes one hell of a good leader and can be found on e-bay. I use his 120lb fluorocarbon with a stringease stay loc clasp. Tell him I sent you his way and I know he’ll take good care of you.

Hope you find this info helpful and please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

Nick I threw one a long time with no takers along with a spro swimbait fast sinker in deeper water 15 - 25 feet. No follows or anything. I think I will wait for the next barometer drop to go hit the lake for the big dogs.

is there a preferred length for those Charlie's leaders? I see he has em from 12-24" long.
Seung,
I've got a bunch that are 12".Try the 12 inchers first. See how you like them. Heck if I see ya on the water I'll give you 1 or 2...That gives you plenty of length for figure 8'n at the boat. You can ask him to make them any length. He's a really great guy. Sells a bunch of leaders for really affordable prices. Tell him Todd sent ya too.I've bought a bunch from him and they are the best in the Musky business..T.
Hey Ron,

If I recall right, your located in the Tanwax area. I fish here and Kapowsin often,if you want to meet up sometime I can loan you some musky cranks etc, I have a ton of Charlies leaders
as well I can hand you.

I personally like to throw a lot of big spinnerbaits. Most of the muskie I have landed this year have come on big spinnerbaits. I know this guy that custom makes some great ones for a very reasonable price. Ok its me.... We have also had some pretty good success on a lure that is known as the "Sexy Dancer" around these parts. All of which come in any color you want. If you want to check some out send me an e-mail at gonefishinlures@live.com. Website isn't up yet but I can send you some pics of some stuff. There will also be some of my stuff at the Mayfield Open tourney, which everyone here should be signing up for!
Hey Jr. Holler at me and we'll wet a line. I'm workin local so we can even hit Tapps after work.

Bucktails and spinnerbaits, I like 6"-8"ers. Jerks and gliders - 8-12" and crankbaits I like a longer leader like 10"-16". It's harder to figure eight with a long leader but it gets the large ball bearing swivel farther away from the lure so there's less distraction for the fish to take away from the lure's image. Most spinnerbaits and bucktails are reaction baits so the visibility of the leader doesn't matter. I've been using Charlie's leaders for about 5 years now. They're the best and darn reasonable. You can get his email address from the top/middle of My Page under sponsors. He'll make you whatever you want.

That sounds made up. You have a picture of every fish you ever caught so prove it punk.
