I want to try a new spinning reel for the 2016 season on my drop shot rod. Looking for something very light. What's everybody using out there? Are there any most popular models? Seems every time I read a post concerning spinning reels, or every time one is for sale, it's a different model and brand. Seems to be no consensus.
I've been using US Reels model 180SX since they came out, and have been very pleased.
But now, they seem to be leaving the market. With drop shot, a great drag is important, but pick up rate / spool diameter, not so much (when using 5lb line especially). Extra spool is "ok", but not the end of the world. Other things people care about? Like bearings? Are people gravitating toward Shimano and Diawa like in Baitcasters?
I'd love to find out. Thanks!

Russ, stop into LOM on Saturday during the seminar and I'd be glad to go over all the options with you.
I'll be there
Its just a reel Russ. Its not a food processor. You stop reeling when the line is nearest the rod. Go to a local tackle shop and handle a few different ones. Take your rod in with you to see how it balances. Those xt's are lighter than ci4's. I do know that.
Good luck.
Good to see you on Saturday Russ and glad I was able to help you pick out a great reel!
Thx Nick, and thanks Jake and Ron for your input.
So, after Nick and Ron got ahold of you, what did you buy?
Not to get into a heated battle with Snake, but my experience with plfueger hasn't been great. With spinning reels, you get what you pay for. They may start off smooth, but they seem to fail more often. I think the gold standard for spinning reels is the CI4. Seem to hold up the longest.
Well...I'm hesistant to say to tell the truth, because of the backlash on this website, but here you go Jake... I considered the Pflueger, but didn't have the time to track one down. My friend uses the Arbor model and says it's flawless, so nothing against the brand or model I'll try one someday when someone has one in the boat. The Daiwa Fuego... I have Lexa and Tatula reels, with some apprehension toward continuing due to some early bearing failures. Nick also pointed out that manufacturing recently went to China, causing some quality issues. I looked at the cI4, but concluded that there just wasn't justification for the additional $110+ dollars over the Symetre since they are REALLY close in design and weight / features. I think it's good reel, so I bought one to try. I've owned a lot of Shimano over the years before making the switch to U.S. Reels 5 years ago, but was just curious about why others were leaning toward Daiwa, Pfluegar, etc. In the end, it's just a matter of opinion, not proof. Kevin VanDam is going to tell you Quantum, and have a lot of really reasons for it, and not just because they are a sponsor, he has to win to pay the bills. Roland Martin uses U.S. Reel, and before that, Abu Garcia, so I think they all are game in the end. Just curious as to what people are using here, cause I figured it might have to do with what models are stocked locally :)
that'a funny, I got a friend that has like 5 of those reels, and he won't trade them out out for money. He says they're gold.

I wouldn't say they are gold... more like cobalt chrome maybe. Pretty darn tough, although they don't make em like that anymore, so it could certainly be stated that buying newly designed products based on old designs is a fools errand.
Let your buddy know, if he wants to pay the price of gold for mine....that they are for sale.
